Does anyone know if there is way of inserting images in to the conversation box?
 
Chat box? You mean the dialogs boxes? Yes, but it takes a lot of programming. Not doable easily.
 
No one did it, but ask DLPB. He'll tell you that it IS very difficult.
 
Adding images to dialogue is beyond me, and since the game has no code there for that you would have to do it yourself.  Good luck :P
 
You could replace bits of the font sheet with images, so different letters could be particular pictures... :P

This. Actually this would not even be too hard to do. Just modify the font sheet and use one of the many text editors to use those characters you replaced.
 
That would work but it would be very bog standard... that is for sure.
 
my plan was to add portraits to the main character's dialogs boxes but i assume i'll have to go threw each peice of dialog and manually edit them?
 
Assuming you used the method mentioned here, yes, you would have to add it to every dialogue. , luckily this could be cut down a tad by search and replace usage in loveless.  Also somethin that big, I am not sure how a font change would help... there is finite space.
