As far as I know, there is no obvious performance or quality hit for ditching shaders. You can't use post processing, though.

Im running win 7 in parallels and was having very weird texture issues when i ticked both of the lower right hand boxes in config (something with flicker, they are three letter acronyms, cant remember.)

and I went to recently installed updates and searched that first update, found that it had been installed and uninstalled it then bam, everything worked perfectly.  :)

I have 331.58 now. It doesn't appear to have this issue anymore but nvidia drivers are giving me a headache with tons of other issues. I managed to avoid freezes for a few days after disabling the High definition audio driver associated with my graphics card from the system devices control (I'm using an old external "soundblaster live" for sound through my stereo). Of course I used a user's tool for completely uninstalling the driver in safe mode and installed the 331.58 in normal mode. After a few days a new nvidia driver is released. I'm not sure to install it since I read about issues with pcsx2 emulator. Has anyone installed the new driver? Any opinions?
