Top 50 in what way? Something related to sales? Recognition? A vote? An arbitrary decision by the person who wrote the list? All I'm seeing is a list of video game characters with a number next to their name. What does this ranking mean?

Touhou is ridiculously popular among the core, but outside that, not many people know them
By sheer 'knowing' Mario would win any poll
Followed by characters like Link, Samus, Snake
Final Fantasy characters unlikely to be in the top 10 or even 20 simply because there are whole franchise lines who have the same protagonist

sales-wise, same goes. franchises > single installment in a franchise
vote heavily depends on who you ask
if you go and do that vote on the street and then on gamefaqs you'll get vastly different results

any list with a ff character in the top 10 is full of bullshit
the games are good, sometimes very good, but not so ground breaking ultra awesome that a character from a installment in a whole franchise could score top 10 in some sort of unrigged poll

Keep in mind, Cloud has appeared in fourteen games to date, not counting remakes, ports, or additional/special editions (with another Dissidia coming soon), a movie, an OVA, and a novella.

One installment? Not even almost. FF7 is virtually a franchise of its own.
 
And in how many of these games was he a main character or had a significantly large role?
Besides, all my other points still stand.
 
He had a medium-large role in 7 of the games, as well as the movie, the OVA, and the novella.

The fact is, he's one of the most recognizable video game characters there is. The fact that he gets so many cameos and minor roles speaks to his relevance.
 
Maybe if you look at the RPG genre, but there are many, many more characters more recognizeable than Cloud.
This list is nonsense.
Also, getting cameo's is not a sign of being easily recognizeable but rather clever marketing profiting off fanboys who just buy it for that part, or pushing undecided into buying it for such reasons.
