I just spliced one of my Xbox Controller S. I switched the end with a Usb cable, pluged it in and set up the drivers. It is the best damn controller I have ever used for pc. You can change anything you want about it, and even read the memory cards you put in there with the action replay software...
I only own 3 controllers on my PC. Xbox controller S, Saitek P750, and a Gravis Gamepad Pro. All are good controllers, but Gravis gamepad pro isnt good for 3d, and Saitek P750 isnt good for 2d. Xbox CS is just the best one ive found.... I havent tried sidewinder before, but after what I have now, i dont want to...
Gravis Gamepad Pro is my choice for simplicity. But it DOES blow for 3d games for the most part. Since it's my opinion that gamepads should never be used for 3d games, I would have to say that you'd be wasting your time, only to be fragged by those using keyboard+mouse. But if you are just peeing in your pants with excitement to play a 3d game with a gamepad, you may as well use an xbox controller. Let's face it: the two-analog deal is a must for looking around and strafing. IMO the button config is a little screwed up, but it's tolerable.
Oh, jeez, why don't you just call around at the local electronics stores in your city. Like we would know what stores are in your town. Give me a break.
