ff7! grr! help!

ok, don't know if this is supposed to go here or not but here we go. ok when i'm playing ff7 on the pc (which works fine) the background characters level as my main 3 are leveling. whats up with that and how do i stop it?! i've tried killing them and then putting them in the phs thing but that doesn't work. otherwise they level up but don't gain any ap and i want them all to have good materia. Any help? is there a trick to it or is that just how it is and if so how do you manage to get all to have good materia at the end?

Why is this a problem? You only receive AP following a battle and your other 3 don't battle.

That's meant to happen.

Your non-active party members gain EXP but not AP.
Even if your levels are maxed, you can still gain AP for materia.
