FF7 strange issue

I recently installed FF7 (french version) for my sis and I tried to do all I could to fix the issue I had (which is: game's starting and then crashing on a black screen)
I run the game in windows XP
FF7 executable is in windows 95 compatibility mode
I installed the 1.02 patch, the upside-down video patch & set options in the config. utility to:
640-480 16bpp full screen (using D3D hardware accel)
Sound driver is the default one & midi driver is the Microsoft one with General Midi option

Have you tried using software rendering?
What kind of graphics card do you have?
 
yeah I tried it, got same results
I have a GeForce 2 MX 400
(I tried it again this morning in windowed mode and I get diagonal lines, some are grey, some are green)
 
I have no idea, you'll probably have to wait for comfirmation off someone who knows something about these types of things, but isn't the weird lines glitch caused by FSAA?
