FF8 Crashes in opening titles

The Eidos screen doesn't even load, or when it does, it will not switch to the squarsoft one, the screen would stay dark.

I have a gforce 5200
windows XP
512 mg DDR RAM

I know there are patches out there, but none seem to work, I didn't bother about the horizontale lines, I changed something in the config and they were gone. What bother me is the fact that the game has been running smoothly for over 2 weeks, without any patches at all. This problem start today and I didn't change anything on my pc or in the game config.

Try a reinstall. Are there different patches for different language versions? If so, did you get the right language?

I have reinstalled 3 times, and still the same thing is happening.

Just thought of this. Could it be a driver problem? You can get new drivers from www.ati.com or www.nvidia.com depending on what graphics card you have or for more advanced users www.omegadrivers.net.

I installed the latest patch, and deleted the publish.pak file, which is the the eidos tittle screen. It works, I can play.

Errr... Actually is eidos_logo.avi or something similar to that.

Actually, in FF8, the movies are stored in .pak files, not on the disc as AVIs.
