Why does direct3d ruin it?

I'm planing on picking up the game, But since there seems to be a lot of unfix problems, i might hold off and just finish it on the PSX.

Why does direct3d ruin it?
because it just does. i think it tries to overcompensate for the old, oudated rendering methods, however FF8 was graphically advanced because it utilised these old methods, and so this overcompensation actually negatively effects stuff. for instance, with direct3D, the Models just seems a bit off. i cant really explain it, but its like the models are trying to be "lit" by special smoothing methods or something. that and it ruins the textures. it blurs them to make it look "smoother", but because FF8 is an old game, the textures are relatively pixellated. this looks fine normally, but when it's blurred, it loses its effect. in fact, world maps look APPALLING, simply because it smooths everything wrong. FF8's smoothing was more to do with the textures, but direct3D doesnt roll like that. the only issue i have with software rendering is that for some reason it glitches up some textures, not model textures, but BG and menu.

Hello, guys.
I have a problem with Final Fantasy VIII (PC).
When use Hardware rendering there are no that lines when summoning Diablos:

Should be like this (Software mode):

How can I fix it? I've already tried FF8 launcher, and different drivers (from catalyst 6.12 to 9.2) - no help :(
My video card is Sapphire Radeon 9600pro advance 256MB.

both hardware AND software rendering have their downsides. and it's different on every graphics card too, i think. i cant get either of them to work like i want them to...
i think it's better to just stick with software rendering unfortunately, unless theres some sort of fix with FF8 launcher that works for you.

i just got my copy of ff8 today (thank you ebay )... so i wanna know, wut mods are there for this game? and how do u make them work?

to be honest, aside from the save game editors and the 3D avatar mod made by Rinoa, not much at all, really.
of course there's a couple of High-res launchers and what have we, those are listed on the first page of this thread.

...unless FF8 launcher isn't, in which case, search for that.

Whilst the soundfont is much better than what it started with, it is still not anywhere near PSF quality in terms of original PSX sound.

Is there no one working on some kind of FF8music?

The good news is, the FF8 movies are much better quality than the PSX ones and enlarging them and enhancing them will be a much easier and much better outcome than the FF7 movies.

That all depends on aali creating a driver for ff8 in same way as 7.  I will be ready if that day arrives :)

Sorry for being a newbie here, but how do I change the resolution for FF8?

Hey any chance of some one reposting the links on the first page? They're pretty much all down as is the soundfont projects site.

I know this is old... but here we go. I finally got the launcher to work. I used 1.31 instead of 1.3 and launched it from my desktop. I have a GTS 210. It isn't a powerful card, but it has all the new features, making it perfect for older 3d games. I am running DirectX11. Antialiasing: 16xQ. 8x supersample transparency. 16x anisotropic filtering. Forced vertical synchronization. I think antialiasing is automatically disabled at higher resolutions, though. Looks like photobucket resizes high-res to 1024x768. Is that right?
Here is with the default settings:

1024x768

1280x960

For me, 1024+AA is almost exactly the same as 1280. Anyway, the game is beautiful and I can once again stand playing it. I just need to upgrade the sound now.

Hi guys,

After how impressed I was with the mods to FF7, I thought I'd try them out for FF8 too, however as expected I'm having a fair bit of trouble with the mods, perhaps even the game it's self (although admitedly I am using Win7 RC client).

Am I right in assuming FF8_Launcher fixed the 8-bit black box issues for nVidia cards? Because despite having the Launcher they're still all over the place. Ran in software mod fixed that, but of course I'd like to avoid the slow down of using the CPU if possible.

I've also tried using the midi's from Sam's package, but even with the older dmsynth.dll, I'm still having issues where the some of the instruments aren't playing.

Some other issues I've tried looking for but may of missed was with my 360 controller, the sensitivity is through the roof, making navigating menu's and such pretty erratic.

Might be another stupid question, but is there an already established topic with a step-by-step guide to using these mods?

Many thanks, in advance.

Sed.

EDIT - Managed to fix the sound with another soundfont, so just the graphics and controller to worry about now!

I ran into the same problem using my xbox360 controller. It was just way too sensitive for FF8 but worked fine on FF7. I wrote a faq recently on gamefaqs about a way to fix this.

I would have made it here but I just recently discovered this forum. Not sure how to help you with your graphics problem but I hope this helps.
