FF8 Forum Section?

I know I brought this up a while ago, but I wanted to see if there was any progress on how to handle the FF8 threads?  I love what Covarr did to the Tools section - but everything else has SOOO much, I was wondering if someone could just pin this thread for now?

At this point I'd say its up to Covarr, and if he feels like it's a good idea and wants to tackle it, I could probably help out a little bit.

But seriously, I don't feel like it. Honestly, the only things I could see myself actually bothering with is the releases and tools; I don't think troubleshooting and general discussion need a separate section that badly. And on top of that, we have a lot of sections as it is, especially for a default forum skin that makes everything take up more space than it really needs to.

I totally see where you're coming from - it was a huge pain to just find these.  At least releases and tools would be really nice :)  In all honesty - pinning this thread would do just peachy - it's pretty thorough.
 
Now that I've slept on it and had time to put some more thought into it, I don't think separating stuff by game is a good idea. Between things like Aali's Driver and DLPB tools, which support both games, FFIX tools which would need their own section for consistency's sake... the workload involved would be huge, and I think the excess frontpage bloat caused by that many more sections would do more harm to our ability to find things than good.

I do think that proper and consistent tagging can do the trick. If every FF8-related thread says [FF8], [FF8PSX NTSC-U], [FF8PC], [FF8PC2000], or similar, all FF8-related release threads should be Ctrl+F-able. I'm also looking into the feasibility of adding custom thread icons, which should make it even easier to tell at a glance, but I can't promise this will be possible.

edit: I found a tagging system that looks promising. I'm gonna do a little more research; I don't wanna accidentally break the forums trying to install it, but it looks like it might be just what we need.

If we can't do a separate forum section, then the tag icons sound good. That and ctr+F work fine for me, I just wonder if it'll be equal amount of workload to keep the forums clean with titles labeled in the format you purposed. People are generally lazy about that stuff :P I love organized forums/posts, so I can help in those regards if needed.

I imagine the tags will be FF7/FF8 type logos?

The tagging system I found is just text tags, but it looks like it might do the trick. It might even be better, because we can use as many tags as we want, as well as search by tag. For example, a single thread can be tagged FF7PC-98, FF7PC-Steam, FF7PSX-NTSC-U, and FF7PSX-PAL-G, if need be. The only catch would be the added importance of consistent tags.

But I'm not 100% positive I can install this without any issues, and the last thing I want to do is cause the forums to go down by accident. If I can't do this right for sure, I won't do it at all.

Also, all threads in all release sections are now properly named, to the best of my ability. Some are simply labeled [FF7PC] without mention of supported version, which is less than I'd like, but I'm not gonna download and run every single mod just to see which versions of FF7 or FF8 they work with. Hopefully mod makers will do this correctly on their own.

edit: Oh, it's easier than I thought to do message icons. I'll do that for now, and look into a true tagging system later.

edit again: No, it's not easier. THe board doesn't have write permission to add smileys, and I need it there before it can be a message icon.. :/

The problem is, I can't get it actually working. I think the only way I could implement this is with FTP access, which I'm not gonna ask Qhimm for. Hell, if I were him, I wouldn't give me FTP access.

Maybe you could modify the theme to have pointers to these icons.  However, I would suggest not pulling a "me", and instead would download a backup and test it on that first.
 
The problem is the way SMF handles smileys. They aren't attached to themes, and are stored separately. Message icons can only come from smiley sets, which is stupid and annoying.
