these are all of the soundfont files that i have found in the ff8 cds and in the ff8 program files :

1. ff8.dls ( 7.88 mb )

2. gm16.dls ( 3.28 mb )

3. synthgm.sf2 ( 44 kb )

are these files the correct size ?

am i missing any soundfont files ?

what is the correct order to load these into creative audio hq soundfont to get the best quality sound from first to last ?

they are NOT soundfonts. the .DLS files are something that windows uses as its own kind of "sound font". They should work just fine by themselves.

correct me if I'm wrong, people, but I'm assuming that ff8.dls replaces "C:\windows\system32\drivers\gm16.dls" when ff8 is installed. then, the midi will sound ok in the game by itself. but when a person wishes to uninstall ff8, the old gm16.dls that elitist has listed will be replaced back, because that's the original.

And don't you even dare to try to load them into the soundfont manager. Instead, try to convert the .dls to a .sf2. Then you might be able to load it in there, and it'll work fine. But don't plan on being able to select the midi device on your computer that will play midis in the ff8 config program.

Why not load them into the soundfont manager? It supports dls files just fine.

I don't think it can. Show me what you're talking about, Mofo. The only soundfont manager I know of is the one that came with FF7(useless crap), and the one inside AudioHQ. I'd love to hear it.

With the newer drivers, any sb live can load a sf2, sfk, or dls file into its memory. Yes it is the one in audio hq. It works with both dls level 1 and level 2 files, and works perfect.(fo' windowz-xp)

Then I shall acquire these..new drivers. And you shall too, Elitist. And if you don't... Yee-Haw.

Edit by Jari: Made a link out of the image, looks nicer.

It should work with all Live cards now. I cant tell a difference between Live, and Live Value..

I have just a plain Live, not value or digital or 5.1...Just normal.

I got screwed. With my SbLive "Value!?" card and it's most "recent" drivers, I can't freakin' load any DLS files. I will now forever have a vindictive angst against Creative. I mean seriously...SCREW THEM!! Why would they do that? And who the hell cares? I can convert DLS files to SF2's any day!

But it still gets me down.

My SBLive! Value can load DLS files.  You must not be able to in anything except Windows 2000/XP.

I thought there was supposed to be liveware or something, what in the hell happend to that?!?!

And I use winxp home

It's like they don't even bother reading anything but the surface...

Jari just said that Creative doesn't support their Drivers, for anything other than WinXP.

I enjoy your sorting of the facts, 360. But I think people were reading what he was saying.

I'm gonna try out win2k with the "newest" drivers with my sblive value just to see what'll happen. When I installed the newest drivers on this windows 98 system (which is about the same time as my last post up there), the sound completely stopped working. For no damn reason. Time to discover the truth, my friends!

[10 or so minutes later]
Yes, I can load DLS files in win2k. But still, screw creative. If they would update their win98 drivers a ton of people would be happy. Assholes.

What a waist of a post. I read what he said, and not only was creative supposed to support the drivers but also the liveware package. Liveware was supposed to be drivers, eax presets, tools, etc all in one package. And now liveware doesnt even exist on the official website.

And jari, wtf is that all about?!

"What attitude?"

I dunno, he kind of popped in and made certain individuals seem like asses. Just seemed a little rude to me..
