Ya, if you own a PS1 though, and FFVII for PS1, you can get ePSXe for Comp and play it on your comp, its perfectly legal. You can't "hack" it as easily though... or can you?

Its actually not.

By law you cant use the PS bios in any way, shape or form, other than that insteded by the manufacturer.  And that being used in a console.
 
Care to point out the law in question and possible precedent? ...because I'm genuinely curious and quite a bit worried, if that indeed is so.

Or is it just based on the concept that using the said BIOS would breach the EULA between Sony and the owner of that console (I assume, I've never bothered to read what it actually says on the PS2 manual...).
 
Ok, So it may not be law, but I know that SONY took BLEEM! in to court over it, and got a court order prohibiting their bios being used in any form other than its designed purpose, so effectively it is a law.

I may be wrong though.

Boy, you also seem to have the facts VERY wrong.

Bleem! never used the PSX BIOS in any way, shape, or form. It was all done from scratch.

Nevermind that Sony lost every case. That didn't stop them, though - the reason Bleem! closed down was because there's no protection in the system from a company suing you repeatedly (even if it loses). Sony made sure they were buried in court costs, and that's what killed the company.
 
Even so, there is legal questionability around using the PSX BIOS, which is why ePSXe doesn't come with the BIOS image, you have to find one yourself to use the emulator.
 
Well, this is because you could download the BIOS off the internet as opposed to extract the one that comes with your PSX.

Sites don't usually offer the BIOS since there's no way of telling if you actually own the Playstation yourself or not.

Lots of websites offer the Bios.

And for the record, I thought thats what they took BLEEM inc to court for, but if you say they didnt....
 
They took Bleem! to court for frivolous BS.

No legit website I've seen offers the BIOS anywhere...but if you don't know where to easily get files, then you don't need to be tinkering with such things :p

TBH, If you dont know how to use a search engine, you shouldn't be allowed to do stuff like emulation.

Personally im sick of people on msg baords saying "Where can I get X rom?" wehen its on the first page of google results when searching for "ROM X"
 
Seeing as how this thread was originally intended for the illegal downloading of FF7 and nothing more it has really quite outgrown its purpose.

I was going to split the topic, but it's quite jumbled between bios and other things.. If someone wants to continue the conversation they can make a thread in completely unrelated about Piracy.
