And
Square-Enix was like "fuck you".
Edit: I've been doing some reading, both on Sky's comments section, and in NeoGAF, and a few disturbing things have popped up:

"Guys, let me clarify that what Sky received is not a C&D letter. It's something else." I don't have any solid evidence this guy isn't talking out his ass, but he does seem to have solid connections to this project. It sounds like there is/will be a lawsuit.

This project was definitely distributed alongside copyrighted data. The filesize was huge, and it's likely that the "patch" included a large portion of the game itself.

Remember how it was released right before E3, a mere two days before Square-Enix announced their own localization? This translation was originally announced for an August release, not June. It's incredibly likely that the team was tipped off about the E3 announcement and rushed out what they had ASAP.

Kotaku's Jason Schreier (yeah, I know Kotaku isn't the greatest source)
had this to say back in March: "I've heard rumblings that Square Enix has a near-finished English script of the game lying around, but that for whatever reason, localization plans were cancelled." This doesn't mean a tremendous amount on its own, but combined with the fan-translation team's apparent advance knowledge of an announcement, it's definite that they had some sort of inside contact, and unfortunately possible that the translation was stolen from S-E themselves. This is just conjecture, but it really wouldn't surprise me.
Now, I really hope that there hasn't been any espionage or theft surrounding this project. It would break my heart to know that members of the
Final Fantasy community would do that. But most of all, I want to take use this as a chance to remind everyone just how important it is
not to distribute copyrighted Square-Enix materials. What we do here at qhimm.com is already legally very gray area, and I'm absolutely positive that our strict stances on piracy and distribution of ripped models has been central to this website's continued existence.
Regardless of whether this translation was completed with stolen text, or whether the team had inside info, there is zero doubt that the patch included copyrighted data. I don't want anybody here to repeat that mistake, so
please make sure your releases don't contain complete LGP files, copyrighted models, or any other content that you didn't create yourself.
