Final Fantasy X Field Camera?

I'm trying to reverse engineer Final Fantasy 10's camera in unity. But I'm not sure entirely how it works just from looking at videos of the game. It seems like the camera's position is set along a pre-scripted path and then it rotates facing the character along that path. While still being able to move slightly off the path which leads me to believe it's scripted to be allowed to move within certain coordinates while facing the player.

But it might be much simpler than that, anyone know how it works?
