Game closing when fight starts.

This has been annoying me lately, about 25% of all random battles result in my game closing, just when the fight music starts i hear it freeze and then play normally but then my game closes and says ff7 has stopped responding.
Im using Battle > Feild mod, HighREZ mod, 1.02 patch. Thanks
 
Have you modified your materia? If you have then some of your party members may have unnamed materia equipped which causes games to crash when a battle starts, or at least that's what happened with me a few times.
 
Are you using Windows XP? I think that XP has some problems with this game sometimes, but I don't remember the solution. I do remember battles crashing as a common symptom though.
 
Windows Xp with a 6600gt. I heard alt tabbing causes instability in the game. I did alt tab.
 
Maybe try switching the compatablility mode to 98/Me or check for that TrueMotion codec.

That seems to be a glitch that both the game creators were aware of, as well as everyone here.. I don't think there is a way around it... If you Alt+Tab, then go back, and enter a battle, it freezes and closes like every time. Though, I found from experience, if you do it DURING a battle, it may be ok for the rest of the battle, until the next one.

You just have to designate time to play where you don't have to Alt+Tab to different applications.
 
Square even disbled Alt+Tabbing for Win98 (SCREENSAVER_RUNNING trick), so they knew it is a problem (that's a good thing - they could just leave it alone for users to discover), and the crashing itself seems to happen in the battle-swirl part of executable. There was a thread here at Qhimms with fix to it - dunno if it works - I Alt+Tab A LOT while debugging but it doesn't involve entering battles, so...

Yeah, you gotta change the code, which kills the battle swirl and kills the crash.  I tried it =)

battle swirl is funkified and wierd, and a bit unsettling, but it works =)

EDIT: Just as a side note: The code change will corrupt some graphic effects; particularily, ones where a textrue is stretched over new 3-d data, such as the sinking floor in KotR, or the Satan Slam part of Vinny/chaos's limit break, and presumably Exit, Titan and Kjata.  So a better fix is probably in order.
