Game Crashes Randomly and Loses Connection to Monitor

Suddenly my game is crashing the computer. It happens at random, though it tends to happen when the computer or the game has been running for a while. The system shuts down and the monitor blanks out, the blinking light indicating that it's lost connection with the main computer.  The music also continues for a while before it loops like a record and then stops. Any idea what's going on?

Specs:
Windows XP Service Pack 2
1024 MB RAM
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz (2 CPUs)
ATI Radeon 9800 XT
 
My first instinct is to reinstall the whole thing. Can you tell us if it has just started happening or if its been doing that? Another guess is that if it has just started happening then you probably have a virus, hard drive corruption, or you installed a patch that caused it. So my suggestions would be to do the following:
1. Reinstall, but get your save files first
2. Run virus scan
3. If you have another hard drive try to use it instead, but only do this if the other two don't work

Beats me... maybe the game just doesn't work with a PC that uses Duel processors.

But if you described that in general terms.....not just related to FF7. I'd guess that a processor or video card is running too hot.
 
Threesixty seems to be right.  I tried running some other full screen game and the same thing happened.  How do I KEEP it from overheating then without buying another cooling unit?

the only thing I can think of is the make sure the fans are clean and there are no obstuctions keeping them from working. If that dose not work try to give it a break ever now and then so it can cool off, but if you don't like then you will need a new fan for your vid card. ( I have seen a fan that you can put in like a pci card on newegg that will help
