Hi, I'm playing FF7 (platinum) for the first time now. It's shameful, I know. I had the chance to play it years ago when my friend lent me the PC version, but I was put off by the graphics of field characters and plus I had FF8 to play at the time. I can't believe I left playing it for so long.

Anyway I am playing it on the PS2 and I am wondering about the compatibility of the game since it is a Playstation title. I have been searching for info about this and only managed to find one thing saying that when you turn on texture smoothing it can mess up transparent textures. So I left smoothing off just in case.

I have played up to disc 3 so far and I'm not sure if there were glitches. I have never played it before on the Playstation or PC so I don't know how things are supposed to look. But I am spotting two suspect things. 1 - The red circle button (of the controller) looks weird whenever it is shown (like during a tutorial) and 2 - transparent textures don't seem to be totally transparent. Like, when meteor is in the sky on the world map you can see a box around it, and magic effects in battle too. Are these things glitches? Does anybody have any more info or know a website that has details about PS1 title compatibility?

Thanks

didnt quite catch that but your'e talking about a PS game on a PS2 right? Well i never played FF7 on PS2 as id already gotten rid of my PS and old games by then but it shouldnt look any different PS games are completely compatible.

I noticed it has a different title this game might have been changed or not a complete original meaning they might have screwed something up. Ya never know.

EDIT: Ahhhh platinum edition wow been so long since ive owned a ps/2 etc i almost forgot about platinum edition games  :P

Hi, thanks for the reply Chesso.

I would have assumed that all PS1 titles played 100% perfectly on the PS2, but I read somewhere that there are problems with a number of games.

Anyway, I completed FF7 just a few minutes ago. I loved the last battle where Cloud uses omnislash!!! And it was really cool seeing the characters faces in detail during the end cinematic. I was kind of hoping for something more special after the credits instead of the "Lion King" though. But I will definitely play it again sometime.

Have you beaten ruby weapon yet? thats another optional part of the game you don't get anything special except some flower to trade for a gold chocobo if you dont already have one from chocobo races. He can be a real asshole to beat sometimes i fought him 7 times in a row once and just came out lucky the 7th time.

Once you have a gold chocobo (if you don't already) there's an island somewhere to the north-east i think top-right hand corner of the map which has the Knights of the round or w/e materia in it that combined with Clouds W-Summon and everyone with Mime its a real killer  8)

I haven't beaten Ruby Weapon yet. I haven't really done anything optional except for getting Yuffie, Vincent and beating Ultimate Weapon. :( I was kind of in a rush to finish the game so it didn't intrude on my work time. Knights of the round? A summon no doubt, I missed that one.  :x

Yeah tis the best one  :P you need a gold chocobo to get it which means either racing and breeding special type of chocobo or beating ruby weapon for the flower to trade for one.

I'll have to get a strategy guide or look on websites for all these secrets. Do you like Final Fantasy 8? That's still the best game I've played. Not only did it have a beautiful romantic element, but they also really developed the characters so you get to know them on a personal level. The in-game graphics and realistic cinematics also allowed for much more emotion to be conveyed. I never felt I knew the Final Fantasy 7 characters very well.

heheh well it was my first rpg ever and which got me into them i also played it not long after it's PS release here in australia well........ill put it this way an old asian friend of mine appaerently had a family member work at some section in sony not sure if it's true or not but this guy had everything  :o

It wouldn't surprise me if he had it before alot of people or atleast here anyway.

FF8 looked nice sure but it just bored me for some reason so did FF9 or rather it annoyed me was funny at times though.

I think Wing Commander 3 is the only game that doesn't work that you'll have heard of.
Rest are random Japanese games.
Could have be fixed outside of the original release of the Ps2 in Japan though...

Ahh the memories..

For some reason, I like the fully CGI'd movies where cloud and crew are proper size, not chibi-style...
EDIT

Also, FF7 was my first RPG too, and since completeling it NOTHING has come close to the gameplay or feeling when you complete it, or the feeling you get when aeris dies....Sad I know, but I got really involved with this game....

From what I noticed....
Playing PS1 games on a PS2 has some slowdowns on ingame special effects.

Games that I noticed it with were, Legend of Dragoon, FF Anthology, FF Chronicals and Legend of Legaia. There are others, but I don't really remember what they were.

In Legend of Dragoon, the Battle Transition takes way too long. What should take a few seconds takes about 6. In Legend of Legaia, the summons are animated too slowly, causing that part of the game to be longer than it should. The Sound ends a good 7 seconds before the Animation does, sometimes longer. In the FF remakes, Saving and Loading of the games takes way too long.

Anyway... Those are the types of compatibility problems that I've noticed with the PS2 playing PS1 games. Mainly, Slow downs during special effects, but nothing really gamestopping. As long as you use a Sony Memory card, that is. And not a 3rd party one.

I'll never know how it felt when Aeris died. Unfortunately for me, my big mouth friends decided to ruin it. They also ruined FF8...

"You completed 8 yet?"
"No."
"Squall dies in the end."
" :o "

And prior to playing FF7:

"Look you can browse the CD and play the movies."
"Oh."
"Watch this one, this bit is sad." (Plays the movie with Aeris' death).
"  :o  "

Squall dies? hmmm i don't remember that lol its been years since ive played it but meh.

Squall didn't die at the end.

Trust me, I remember Squall's character devopment being depressing and dull. Nothing happy like that happened at all.....

oh good i thought my memory was starting to go on me for a while there.......

If only I could sig that!

He didn't die? But his body is lifeless at the end. I thought Rinoa was just remembering him when you see him in that bit after the credits.

You get quite a bit of insight into Squall's character in FF8. And even when he doesn't say anything, his hand gestures, body language and heavy frown continue to convey his personality and make him 'real'.

I felt we didn't get to know Cloud on a personal level that much. We are told he is cold and when he was younger he wasn't accepted by the other children. Other than that he just seems like a generic hero. But I guess 7 was more about the story (which was superb by the way).

 Well he was a bit of a fool but he doesn't deserve to die.
