For some good amount of time now, I have been backing up every game, software cd, and such the day I buy it. Most of the time I just make a copy or two of the CD and place them somewhere safe where they wont be lost or damaged, and also sometimes the really important ones, I make copies, and save the image to me hdd =]

Now my question is, is that illegal? I don't believe it is, i just want to be sure.. I do own the original to every backup I have. Also I am not re-distributing the backups I make. In my eyes, if this is illegal, it shouldn't be. Because for one, I own the original, and the second and most important, I am not giving it out or selling it to anybody. I brought this question up to a friend of mine, and he got rather mad at me. We have both been programmers for a while now, and he looked at me as though I were crazy. He refused to give me his answer because, 'if I don't already know then i shouldn't be alive' What great friends I have eh?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I wasn't sure whether to post this here in general discussion, or in the off-topic one.. So once again, I do apologize.

1. This is the wrong place, but I doubt you'll get warned, since you made an honest intelligent attempt to get it right. But yeah, it goes in Completely Unrelated. General Discussion is really for Final Fantasy or Square-Enix related things.

2. TECHNICALLY it is illegal if you have to circumvent some form of copy protection to do so. You will almost certainly never be prosecuted for it. Nobody will ever look down on you for it. By all means, it really ought to be legal, and you'd be hard pressed to find somebody who thinks you're doing something wrong, but the way the law is worded is kinda stupid.

3. WTF at your friend's response. Seriously.

^ This.

Doing something illegal is nothing you should worry or care about if it's an unenforced law that you're breaking :P If the people who made the rule don't really care about it, then why should anyone else?

Well thank you for the responses.

To the comment about what my friend said? Exactly my point. I need to find new friends lol.  ps. sorry for not quoting, I am most definitely too lazy right now =]

Yeah, I also thought that your friend's response was somewhat... Highly unorthodox.  :x

Hm, the reason this is illegal is because, in this world, you can never tell who lies and who doesn't. Now, I'm not saying you're lying, for I think that you are telling the truth. I mean, why wouldn't you? But there are some people that could easily lie and nobody could ever tell unless they show said proof.

In your case, there's nothing wrong with what you're doing in terms of your self. Reason you back those things up is because in case the original copy gets damaged or gets replace, you won't have to worry about buying a new one. It is just like saving files, photos, programs, etc. Always make a back-up just in case something happens like your computer exploding.

Just an example. :-P

Thank you, I am glad everyone seems to be taking my side on this one =]

This.  Moved

i think the only real reason its even considered illegal is because you could sell the original and keep the backups (reverse of what people usually do) other wise i'm sure it would be legalized, but again, no law enforcement really seems to care nowadays. and its not like your spreading it through P2P (not that thats really policed either, sept for here of course).

in other words, don't worry bout it, i'm sure nothing wrong and your friend is just being a.... excrament-head.

I love that this place is slowly becoming more and more filled with quality posts such as a smiley face.  This is at least the 2nd one I've seen in a week.

/complaining

Hm, you can do one of two things: Do not post at all. Or. Put that you agree in his terms with a sentence and at least give an explanation as to why or something. I'm posting it out of sincerity, I know it sounds like I'm being an asshat, but I do not mean it in that sense lol.  :P

I do agree, it was pure lazyness and in all honesty, pretty much useless.

To who it matters though, this thread is getting pretty off topic and i do suggest it be locked.. The discussion has gone far enough, and all questions answered. Not to be rude or anything. But i do believe you Mods dont like this sort of thing...

I rarely lock topics in the unrelated section. It doesnt really matter if the topic shifts into something else. If it was elsewhere i would lock it.

I had forgotten it was moved. Before I believe it was in general discussion..?

Yep, I guess so.

This just a pretty much random forum; only thing that'll get you locked is illegal stuff, advertising, posting pr0n, you know, stuff you wouldn't consider tolerant.

We'll just let this thread die instead... Starting... NAOH! :D

... stuff you wouldn't consider tolerant.
Grammar Nazism!

Tolerant tolerable.
Well if you want to be a Nazi about it, you could have kept from changing the word. Instead it could just as well have been ".. stuff you wouldn't consider being tolerant to"   =]
