having sound problems with FF VII help would be appreciated

Well as the title implies, im having sound problems playing FF7.
Midi music works just fine, however the sound effects don't work at all.
things you should now:

- I do hear the chocobo sound in the config program
- I run windows XP sp 2
- i have the latest drivers installed for my soundcard, which is an realtek AC'97 (built in to the motherboard)
- I patched FF up to 1.02 and installed the Final Fantasy VII Multi Patch 1.1.1
- I installed ace mega codec pack
- my audio.dat size is ~70 meg

I'm beat, tried lots of things, some which were suggested on this forum, just can't figure it out though? anybody got it ideas?

p.s. my wave isnt muted either
 
If it was Win98 I would know the answer...but I never ran into this problem with WinXP so.... I have no idea. If you figure it out...then you can be the expert on this.

FF7 does have a volume for both midi and sound inside the menu...somewhere. Maybe it's tuned down inside the game itself? Usually, those slider volume bars are disabled, though.
 
The only thing I can suggest is to make sure that the audio device that you are using is the preferred audio device for that particular kind of playback in your advance sound options.
 
nah both the volume slider and sound device appear to be ok, thanks for the input though
 
In FF7config theres a tab on sound. See if its set to the right device.
 
I can tell you the Win95/98 solution....

You would go into Add/Remove programs.... Go into Windows setup.... go into multimedia, uncheck the Audio and Video Compression (or Codec, or something, I forgot). Apply. Reboot. Recheck the Audio and Video Boxes, Apply, Reboot, and it would most likely be fixed.

Problem with WinXP..... Audio and Video Compression, isn't on the list. I'm sure the fix is still the same, but....I don't know of any way to tell windows that you want to reinstall those certain components.

Maybe removing the audio codecs from Multimedia in ControlPanel, is the way to do it.... But I don't know. I'm guessing. And I don't know what would happen if you did that.

Anyway, I also have that soundcard, along with my Soundblaster card. I never actually use it, but I'll try to get it to work with FF VII and see if I can help you out.

360: tried that the other day ended up screwing over my videos as well (don't ask me how)
atlan: what can i say don't have a lot of imagination ;)
 
Have you tried to install the latest drivers? I have, but I get a blue screen error halfway the installation.
 
I actually had the same problem, and the first thing I figured was that it was my onboard soundcard. I could hear the midi music and some sound, but everything out of the right speaker was mute. I knew my right speaker worked because all other programs had no problem.

My solution? I bought a new soundcard to stop relying on my onboard one. Even if it wasn't the problem, the solution sounds great! I bought a SoundBlaster Live 24bit card for $25-29 at newegg. I can hear every sound, kewh, and swordslash now from every direction. I spoiled myself and got a new headset too!

You might want to test out other theories before this solution, but if all else fails, a new soundcard might be a blessing in disguise!
 
Did you have the updated sound drivers since you started playing or did you update when you got the issue?
 
I myself have always had the problem. I never got the AC'97 to work properly. I thought of this as a nice opportunity to try to get sound out of it, but even installing new drivers is a problem, it's the first time I've actually got a blue screen error on XP. I've just given up on it.

Buying a new soundcard is not such a bad idea. You can buy one for about 30 euros (I presume you're in the Netherlands judging by your name). You're problems will be a thing of the past with a SB live card.
 
hmm yes, maybe buying an actual soundcard for a mere ~30 euros isn't such bad idea, might be able to spare myself lots of frustration  :D. especially since there doesn't seem to be an apparent solution to my problem.

p.s. yes I already ahd updated drivers when I started playing

Than as one final piece of advice, try getting rid of them, perhaps they are the issue?
 
I tried the old drivers included with Win XP as well, Relf. They don't work either. Maybe Realtek can give better support on this. It's their soundcard after all.
 
Finally awoken FF7 after a couple of months, mids don't play aww, last time I played it was on Windows 2000... And that soundfont crap dosen't seem to work, then again, I didn't do it properly...
*sigh* *trotts of to find FF7 ost and use FF7Music*

Lets see if that works...
