I feel like some of my hard drive space has been cheated awa

How come when I go to properties on the hard drive it says I'm using 5.2 gig, but when select all the items in it it says I'm only using 4.4?  I seriously have never noticed that before and I don't think its normal... .8 gig is quite a lot of space to waste (compared to what I have total) and it would be nice to have it back :razz:
 
*sigh* nevermind, I figured it out.  Never thought I could free up around 800 meg by running ScanDisk.
 
Lost clusters only. You don't need to make noise here for just that.
 
Joey, he didnt know what it was so he was seeking help, had he known the problem he would have fixed it himself :smile:
 
Better run ScanDisk and the Defragmenter frequently, it really improves your PCs performance..

It's like watering a plant, replenish the lost 'water' :grin:
 
oh yeah that reminds me.

Whenever I run Disk Defragmenter (either the Windows one or Norton's) it comes up with "Cvtaplog has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down."  Disk Defragmenter works fine until it actually starts defragmenting, and then it hangs.  I tried replaceing Cvtaplog.exe and Tmapi.dll but it still does this.  I think a Windows reinstallation will fix it, but does anyone else know anything about it?
 
Try and get a copy of Norton Cleansweep if you want to free up some space on your hard drive. Its realy good. It will remove any un-used files, it has a defragmenter with it, it cleans up your system registry andperforms lots of diagnostics tests on your drive. Plus much much more!

As for your problem with Disk Defragmenter, sorry I can't help there!
 
Yeah... the problem is Norton's disk defragmenter (forget what its called) has the exact same problem.

Oh well, getting a new comp in like a week, so I shouldn't be worrying about it.
 
The only real way to fix this problem is converting to a better filesystem than the sh*t microsoft made for Win9x and 3... I guess you must use Windows so then you should upgrade to Win2K or WinXP an format your drive as a NTSF system to get back all of your space.

Other operating systems than windows don't have this problem.

The problem is that in FAT32, a file always take up an even number of bytes....for instance, if you have an empty file it can use up to 32 kb on itself, while a file of 31 kb will use the same 32 kb. The loss is greater on small files, so zipping all the files you don't use regularly would help the problem (and also the zip would make the smaller of course). With 5 GB of disk space I guess you'd be using it all regularly though...
 
hehe my comps so screwed up, i cant run scandisk for more than 2 minutes without it restarting.
 
When there is some problem i run scandisk for windows, usually im able to save most of lost data, then run defragment to clean up and scandisk again to check it.
Darkness: try to run scandisk from windos command line, c:windowscommandscandisk, nothing should restart that one. If you can run it.
Yeah and in some programs like Partition Magic thou can set cluster size to your needs, I think smallest available for FAT32 is 4K ? (probably like jari said)
btw im still using FAT16, and i dont see any problem in it, on my 15GB hdd
 
Yeah, NTFS is great.  Not only does it have a better way of keeping track of files, but it allows certain users to "own" files, and grant or deny access to other users.

It's one of the many reasons WinNT, 2K, and XP are just so much better than the 9x/ME series.

What is NFTS like(ads and disads)? And if I have a hard drive of 20GB then is it okay for me to convert from FAT32 to NFTS 'cause I heard or read somewhere that it is recomended you have 30+GB before you go over to NFTS.

Disk defragmenter can cause certain sensetive programs and large files to crash or malfunction. It's better not to defrag a drive with important and large data as they can malfunction. An example of an app is Red Alert 2(Slower, more cannot initialize messages) and an example of a file is a movie(Gets jerky or even crashes your computer) or a mp3 file(Snaps, crackles and pops, gets unplayable or crashes your computer, again). I got this info from my own Xp.
