I have the Steam version of FF7... Would it just be easier to mod the original?

I looked up how to mod the Steam version, and it seems much harder than modding the original... Am I correct in assuming I should just go ahead and get the first one?
 
It's not really that much harder. Install to a non-default location (if you only have one HDD, this might mean moving your Steam install, which I admit can be a pain), run the game converter, and then you're as good off as using the 1998 version.
 
Not to mention the 1998 version is scarce or non-existent anymore.
