My, my, my. Things aren't looking very good for Sony, are they?

Finnish consumer rights groups and some EU courts have deemed the removal of OtherOS illegal, hackers are running rampant with software hacks that could lead to mass piracy on a console with slim profit margins and PSN has been down for a week.

What's more, it looks like Sony might have lost your credit card information. It has certainly lost a lot of your other personal details.

There's a lesson to be learnt from all of this: don't mess with neckbeards. If you stop us from installing Linux on every electrical or even mechanical device we can find, we'll fuck your shit right up. And by "we", I mean "they".

The only way the PS3 will be able to recover is if it gets some games.

About time, hopefully they just reinstate it for everyone, but i doubt it will happen that way. Maybe sony is just saying that they were hacked and credit card numbers were exposed? I bet they are racking up the cards to generate 'profit'. Unfortunately my credit card could be one of the ones used.

Even I bought things using that service (Valkyria Chronicles DLC, as it happens). Thankfully, since tens of millions of people's data was harvested, there might be security through obscurity.

After crushing the competition with the PSX and PS2, they got so arrogant that they turned into the Apple of the gaming industry: high prices, shiny crap with NO GAEMS and massively unwarranted confidence in their security.

Something similar happened to Nintendo after they'd won two generations in a row. After the Gamecube, I thought they were dead and buried. Maybe Sony will get their act together in time for PS5.
 
What happened is they've been raiding the homes of hackers and suing plenty of other people.  Karma is a bitch.  I hope their reputation is permanently ruined.

Did it not happen a little earlier? Remember the PS2 marketing machine, with all its guff about the 'Emotion Engine', with official PSX mags sincerely posing the console as a 'supercomputer'? Remember the 'visual poetry' that came with the early demo discs, the pretentious ads and the console's ridiculous visual design?

Actually, come to think of it, the PS2 was less a massive success, than a consummate failure saved only by sheer numbers. Consider how the early PlayStation network flopped, how Sony's DLC plans never came to fruition before the PS3, and how the PS2 + HDD + Digital Video Recorder combo 'PSX' sank millions of wasted resources. I wonder if the rot started quite early, just masked by the sheer numbers guaranteed by the brand power of the earlier console?

As for Sony's sue happy nature, that started loooong ago. Ask Halkun! Or maybe the guys from Bleem.

And I was under the impression that Halkun, and the likes of Chrono Trigger Resurrection, only received C&D's
 
It isn't as if Sony's paranoia is a recent thing, though. I wonder if the PSOne's massive marketshare convinced Sony that they, and they alone, were the one and only focus of warez groups?

In short; consumer bought a PS3 on first of April, last year - the very same day Fony released an update which removed support for OtherOS. Consumer demanded 150 euros for compensation - bit more than half of what he paid for PS3 - because the console no longer worked as advertised; you could either run Linux on it, or you could update it and play online, but not both.

The seller declined to pay, arguing that the consumer had entered into an agreement with Fony, and had performed the update on his own; seller had nothing to do with either.

Fony declined to pay, arguing that blah blah, security concerns, more blah blah, consumer has agreed to licensing terms, blah blah.

Consumer disputes board ruled that there is an obvious defect in the product, and that license agreements can not overrule Winnish law - consumer protection law in this case - and recommends (it's not a court of law, after all, just a consumer disputes board...) Fony and/or the seller pay 100 euros compensation to the consumer.

I'd assume that the seller and/or Fony will pay, it's not much money and if they won't, the neckbeard might take them to an akshual civil court, and would rather likely win.

Open source is still the way to go, it seems.
