My FF7 crashes to desktop when I try to boot up

Okay, long story.
I have a laptop with a Mobility Radeon 9000, XP SP2, all that good stuff.  Very current.  Anyway, I tried to install FF7, and, after long, agonizing, cold, lonely nights, I FINALLY managed to get it to work (with the evil Animevamp patch  :D )  But, being the genius that I am, I attempted to fix it, seeing as how it was so very broken.  When I finished royally screwing everything up, I uninstalled everything (including the evil patch), and hoped that I can do everything over again.  After installing all the patches I remember I have to, and looking around to see if I had forgotten any, I try to start up.  Lo and behold, the Eidos intro starts, music and everything, and doesn't really finish because the game "has encountered a problem and needs to close".
Tried everything I can think of, but I know I must have missed something because I managed to get it working before didn't I?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

First, use the official 1.02 patch located here.  Second, try using different compatability modes.  Most people I have found got it running ok on the Windows 98/ME setting.

Sorry, that didn't help.  Just to humor you, I even uninstalled the game and applied the patch again (just in case I had done something that would conflict) but to no avail.
For some stupid reason, I was not clear in my first post.  I cannot actually see the logo, just hear it.  As the logo sound finishes, or just before it does, it repeats like a broken record a couple of times, and then I get the "FF7 has to close etc."
It seems that I have an interesting case.  I can find few other people who have my problem, and those that do either have it solved in ways I have already tried or cannot solve it at all.

Yes, but that isn't it.  Still fails to progress past the logo.  The movies work fine when I run them off the CD (not even upside-down :D ) but it just won't go when I try to run the exe.  I am starting to think that the problem isn't movie related at all... but my CDs have no scratches or anything...
