The problem I see for the psp appears to be large. From what I can understand the technology is not the same as in the ps2, so games can't simply be ported over to the device, also ps2 quality games don't come cheap and take quite a while to produce.
Games companies now tend to take few risks with games so the way it seems to me is that it isn't economically viable to make expensive games for something that is well out of the price range of most portable gamers. Lets not forget that the gameboy market is made up of kids who are bought the consoles by their parents, how many parents are really going to buy a $300 portable games machine when the nintendo alternative is a lot cheaper and likely to have a far bigger games library.
For me the psp falls squarely into the realm of a gadget, and for this reason I can't see it doing nearly as well as the ds.

The DS is about twice as thick as the PSP, so even there the PSP wins out. As for ports, Gran Turismo 4 and T.H.U.G. 2 are being ported to the PSP also. And if Ac!d isnt a big risk, then god strike me down. I dont think a Card Turn-Based RPG Metal Gear game rings like a good idea in people's head, but it looks good, Gamespot added some new screenshots today.
As for the price and kids, thats why Sony isnt aiming for such a child-like audience. Look at the DS lineup and look at the PSP line-up. You'll see the same pattern with the PS2 and GC lineups. Sony seems to be aiming towards the usual 15-30 year old category, just like it does with the PS2.

As for the GBA's library, alot of it isnt very appealing to begin with. 2/3rds of its library are Nickelodeon/Disney/Cartoon/Children's titles, console ports that dont do them justice, and just random crap that looks like someone fell asleep the night before the deadline with a huge chunk of the game still unprogrammed.

I think the size of the system is going to have little to do with how successful they are going to be, after all people do walk around with cd players on their belts, anyone thats ever read a book is not going to be bothered by size issues.

The way I see it is that whilst sony is targetting the 15-30 demographic its not going to get to the lower age bracket. Few teenagers has a spare $300 for a portable gaming system and I can't see the parents of the masses flocking out to buy them like they did with the ps2. It will be a gadget and as such is going to have a smaller target group than the ds will.

The comment about the GBA lineup is justified but also proves the point, its a lot easier to make games for due to the pricing system for developing (as halkun mentioned) so a lot more small companies make games for it, so it has more developer support. If nintendo stick to their pricing system and sony sticks to theirs then the ds will go the same way.

I will probably end up with one though, but will wait until the price comes down to a reasonable level.

The way I look at it is this:

Do you use your PS2 as your main CD player? Do you play PS1 games on your PS2 every day? Chances are, no and no. Forget the backwards compatability, forget the media features, the MP3 playback, forget about all this gadgetry stuff, wireless phonecalls, video player, just look at the system and its games. You want more younger-geared games? Or do you want something a little more mature? Thats what its going to come down to:

Who has the games that people want to play.

I also do see parents flocking out in the masses during Christmas and what not. What do they know about this thing? All they know is that their children want it, and of course, they will buy it for them. Or they'll buy it with their own money if they have a job, or if they save up money from the holidays.

Dirge of Cerberus
Dirge: First word of a prayer. A "song or poem" of "grief or morning".
Cerberus: 3-headed dog guarding the entrance to Hades; son of Typhon.
Hmmm... In FF7, his first Limit Break could resemble Cerberus. Perhaps it's a reference to Vincent’s "mournful" story regarding is "transformations". But "3 heads" is more likely a reference to 3 people in authority. Perhaps, then a reference to the "death/takedown" of the “3 leaders" in the Turks (ie: b4 Heidegger took over). This kind of idea supported in the FF Logo seen on the image.

Looks like an adventure rather than an rpg
Yep. Tho, Vincent has/had a gun. So we can gather it's probably a FPS style adventure. Um, has Square ever done a FPS? :erm:

...unless those are fmv's...
Could be. I speculate those are only "concept/demo" art/movies (perhaps with the actual in-game models?), but that's just a guess. An "adventure game" (non-FPS) with guns just doesn't make sense. On an added note, guns "only in FMVs" just isn't fair :P .

Can anyone translate that text?

Bah i forget what it said...one sec....bah cant find the exact quote. Something about meeting reeve (as in what vincent is saying). My guess is that it will be a Devil May Cry type of game, not a FPS. Everything they know about the game was listed already:

"A scan from Shounen Jump for the new FFVII game has surfaced. The game has been titled Final Fantasy VII: Dirge Of Cerberus and features Vincent as the main character. It should be noted that Midgar is shown in ruins, indicating that the game will be a sequel, rather than a prequel. The story of Dirge of Cerberus takes place 1 year after Advent Children. Vincent, while in a town that was supposed to be peaceful now, is attacked by a mysterious group called "DC" (possibly Dirge of Cerberus). He also mentions a place where he will be meeting Reeve. Dirge of Cerberus is scheduled for a 2005 release on the PS2, though its genre has not been confirmed. Some new screens from AC are also in the scan, though they may contain minor spoilers. "
