Ok, I've got a friend who's trying to play an old DOS game (specifically, Ultima VII). Its DOS and complains about EMS386 and XMS memory - and it wants them disabled. Anyone know how to mess with this?

Are you running from a Dos box, with windows in the background?
That's your problem. If you went straight to DOS without going to windows first, then most likely EMM386 won't be loaded....

If it doesn't want those loaded.....
then go to your
Config.sys
file and put REM<space> in front of the line that says EMM386 and Himem.exe.
By <space> I mean a "space", not the word space.
If it's asking for EMS memory.....then you what to leave those lines alone, but add RAM to the end of the EMM386 line.
like this:
DEVICE=C:WINDOWSEMM386.EXE ram

DOS memory thing... Hmm, if I open a DOS box in Windows98SE and type 'mem' it's telling me I have 64mb RAM even though I'ev got 512mb. Could this be a DDR problem or mobo problem? Or just 98 being 98. Getting 2k today.

Do pretty much what Three said. I just wanted to add this:
If you're running this from a Win9X/ME box, create a boot disk, REM those lines on it, and use it. If you're running Win2K/XP, and not using NTFS, create a boot disk from a Win9X or DOS machine, REM those lines, and use it. If you ARE using NTFS . . . well, try copying the game to a CD and running it from that (just make sure your boot disk has DOS CD-ROM drivers.)

As for you putting down '98.
Look at the numbers behind Free XMS memory, apparently it's droping the First digit......The program is really meant for Dos mode, and was made when MsDos was your OS. How many Dos programs can you name that used anything, more than 8megs of Ram?

It's actually DOS being DOS. Back when that version of DOS was made, 64 megs was still the magic number for memory. I agree with ThreeSixty in that it's probably a limitation built into the OS itself.
Neither your DDR RAM nor your Mobo is having problems, so don't worry about it.

its actually 64k isnt it? am i way off here... ? i have some old dos games but they want VESA drivers .. like the origional flight unlimited.. and a game called Apache.. Apache is pretty sweet you get missles and you can take off and blow up your own base.. my friend and i got drunk one night and acted like rednecks and blew the hell out of everything.. i miss that game.. hasnt worked since.. but i really stopped working on trying..

Old Qemm386.....I have that old program, somewhere. Only one problem with it. It doesn't work with any Windows higher than 3.1. (Obsolete software).

Who remembers fiddling with the MEMMAKER command? :naughty:
Back when I was a young 'un, I remember seeing my dad work with both Memmaker and QEMM386, and seeing how much of a memory boost it gave him.
All I can say is THANK GOD FOR BOTH THE WIN9x KERNAL AND DIRECTX!

heh....Msdos 5.0 didn't have memmaker. Had to learn it the hardway. Had to learn how to read manuals that were made by people who shouldn't be writing manuals.
