Hmm dziugo. Useful information. I'll bear that in mind when I help people in the future.

Thanks! Heh, brain lag

I wonder why moviecam.lgp remained in the movies folder of the original discs though.

* and I am done!

FF7 Config = success
Entered the splash screen = success

Then this problem arose. Was going to quit to Windows. Pressed Ctrl+Q but couldn't move the cursor to Yes, even though I had the numlock key lit. Should I proceed with the cfg file?

* Nevermind... 4 and 6 (U and O without Numlock) were the left and right arrows.

Glad to hear about your success.

P.S. If you want to use things such as LGP tools and stuff, put them in the root of the PortableFF7 folder (where ff7.exe is). The cause of the problem is that those tools read FF7's registry key to find out where to find FF7's data files. Speaking from experience, LGP tools balked when it couldn't find the data files in .\ (the current dir). Took me a few hours before I finally figured the problem out. Bear that in mind if you ever decide to use those programs.

Argh, my first real problem. The first battle... When it was time for the victory fanfare, I was brought back to Windows. Any ideas why?

Hmm, I just started a new game on my PortableFF7 and tried it out. It didn't hang, crash or whatever. Just curious, what patches have you installed? If I understand correctly, the thing quit to the desktop when it was about to play the music and fade out to the "Gained EXP and AP" screen?

Yup, right before they do their pose. I only installed the Chocobo patch and the MGP. I bypassed the laptop patch and all the others in YAMP.

* Ok, I disabled the truemotion codecs in K-Lite and everything seemed to run just fine. Solved... for now :p

* I think this would be the last big problem for the moment --- my movies won't play.

* After several experiments, I was able to isolate the cause and find a solution. I merely uninstalled K-lite, then reinstalled everything (KLM and TM). I used a different TM20 codec though (from the wiki... still the same but it's an executable). After disabling Truemotion in ffdshow and avi splitter in codec tweaks, I finally got the movies to run smoothly. Thanks again for this invaluable guide.

Oh yeah, it is normal for the game to quit to desktop when you finish playing? After the Red XIII epilogue and the explosion vid?

Hey!
Brand new to the forum, having dusted off my FF7 box for the first time in a while!
I have been trying to follow the instructions on the first page to make it portable.

I come up with a problem (or maybe 2?)

The game loads fine, but when I choose "New Game" I get a picture of Tifa looking at an airship and it says "Insert Disc 1"

I have followed the OllyDbg guide, but I guess I did something wrong somewhere, but I cant work out where.

Sorted that, followed the instructions again, and its working. Now I am getting a black screen after choosing "New game".. i know I've seen the fix somewhere.

Oh , also the non-paranoid link http://cl0ud.net/portableff7.zip doesnt work..

I have sorted everything, and created a portable folder with the required files. However, it works on the system I installed it on, but not on any other.
If I transfer it to a fresh computer, it crashes to desktop trying to play the squaresoft intro.
Obviously its something to do with the tm20dec codec, but I dont know what. It's definitely registered etc.

I'm wondering if I have a codec installed from an earlier installation or something.

Would REALLY love any help  :-D

thanks

As awesome as this is (and I'm sure it'll work without seeing the video) I'm not sure this is a good idea in the long term.

The Flash Drives (as they're technically called) aren't made to be read/written to in high volumes multiple times. I'm talking on the order of hundreds or thousands of reads, not just a few dozen. This, of course, depends greatly on the quality of the brand of the one you're using. Some Linux distros can be run from a Flash Drive if you have the ability, but they recommend against doing that longer than a few weeks since the hardware in the drive will start to corrupt.
I don't use flash cards so I can't attest to their integrity, but the same probably applies.

That's what others are saying about the SSD trend in laptops, but, apparently, no one has encountered any such effects yet

I use an XD card for my Olympus digicam. While I always buy one each year (since it is bad practice to keep your eggs in one basket), my first card (256mb) has gone through 3 different cameras and is still in commission to this day, with nary a read/write glitch.

The best way to make it last is to transfer or duplicate its essence to various cards (every year or two). I keep one in my HDD and another in a flash drive.

Reading has no effect on the wear life of flash memory storage devices, only writing. But flash drives and most memory cards (SD, CF, but not XD) have an embedded microcontroller (read: tiny computer) managing the writes and performing wear-leveling. The only writes the device will get after the copying of all data to it will be the time(s) when you save. Since each save file is only 64KB, it will not be wearing out any kind of flash devices for the foreseeable future (read: Asteroid impact, nuclear holocaust, death of the sun, etc etc). For the record, wear-leveling significantly extends lifespans of flash devices by spreading the writes around different blocks so one particular block doesn't get worn out. I read somewhere than a typical SSD can sustain data continuous writing to it at its maximum write rate for something to the order of 40-odd years before a single block wears out. Heck, even if it took 10 years instead of 40 to wear out, where will your shiny new MacBook Air be in 2018? Probably put on eBay for $50 perhaps? :P

Hi do you know if there is a way to get around the codec issue?I plan on taking ff7 to college for lunch break and won't have admin rights.

I mucked about with it, and yeah, I think so. Just have TM20DEC.AX in the same folder as PortableFF7 and you can get by without registering the DLL.

Sorry but could you please host your files on rapidshare or megaupload? I can never download off cl0ud.net

EDIT: Nevermind I managed to get it sorted now I will test it out at college (and hope I don't need to register the codec)
