PS3 Hard Drive upgrade!

This is something that troubles me for a while. I had a 120 GB ps3 Hard Drive and cloned it to a 500 GB HD using a hard drive cloning device. The drive is suitable for ps3. Everything works as before but my free space appears to be the same as before (7075 MB) while it recognizes the true HD size (500 GB) in the System info. Do I need to do a format and restore it from a backup drive to fix this? Any opinions? Thanks!
 
you need to back up to a 3rd drive then after installing the new HD to the ps3 and doing the initial set up you can then restore your backup to the new drive.
 
When you clone a hard drive, it keeps the partition layout intact, and any extra space on the new drive remains unpartitioned. It's not really the recommended method for swapping PS3 hard drives; the PS3's own backup function (as sithlord mentioned) is far better for this. Unfortunately, you do need a third (external) drive.
 
I was looking to upgrade my ps3 hdd aswell 250gb to 1tb hdd.
Googled before but never found a proper answer except a solution like get another ps3, transfer data to their then install new hdd on the other then transfer it back.
I won't be able to get ahold of another ps3, i got a 500gb portable usb hard drive though... Not quite sure how i can move data to the new hdd :/
 
You just use the backup utility from the system settings and the external HD needs to be in fat32 format for the ps3 to see it. Then you install your new HD and use the restore utility in the system settings.
 
I did that but it didn't back up PS+ games which i don't want to redownload all of them again, doesn't transfer to external hdd :/
