haha thats cool. i think im gonna go look at the members list now....

I remember about her bro/sis(Straywings) saying that her/his sister saying that his sister rarely surfed the net and looked gloomy all day because of the reset....

Aaron: I know just another method (b'cause I'm an Admin, too):

As an  Admin you're able to change the posts count how you want. You can set it higher, lower, to zero or even below. Whatever you want. And even if the PHP scripts don't allow that, you can simply access the FTP server and the member file, and edit it manually...

You can only change the files via ftp for cgi based boards.
For, Php boards, stuff is usually stored in an SQL database.
So, you have to edit the info from there.

does this mean that if we make you mad u will reset our post? Nooooo.....

Somehow, Joey, I really don't think a post reset would affect your status in our board at all.

'Sides, I think if Qhimm or SaiNt was going to reset your count that day would have come a long time ago...

post counts dont really matter. if it effects one's status that much, then they have a problem. It does, however, seem like a lot of work and time would be taken away.

Post counts don't really matter.

Have any of you been to FFWA's boards?
When they had a lot of spamming to deal with, the just deactivated the post count. The post count was still there, but it was only visible in the profile and on in the topic. It did prove to be quite effective in lowering the level of spam.

P.S. -
Just in case anyone doesnt know what spam exactly is, here's a pretty well used definition of it.

I'm sure you could calculate rankings based on post length and other such things; the only limiting factor would be someone actually writing the code to do that  Don't know whether Qhimm or SaiNt would have the time to do it.

Ranking based on posts usefulness is fairly cool, but the only way to do it is a self-rating system; the boards members each rate other peoples posts. Usually it'd be combined with a scaling system, so the higher rank you are, the more your opinion counts for than other people's (though not enough that it makes theirs useless, just a slight weighting difference).

If you're going with automatic ranking, the sensible thing to do would be:

-Ranking based on length, penalties for one or two word posts, bonuses for long ones (unless it's a *useless* long post of nothingness, in which case the mod steps in). Also not counting quoted text.
-Penalties for posting in a topic when the last person who posted was you. Chains of 8 messages all from the same person aren't very nice (the Edit button is good, people!)
-Still tracking raw post counts for the boards stats, and maybe users' profiles, just not calculating ranks directly from them.

SaiNt #1: Sorry, my Board's a CGI-based board, so I simply thought the way things go the same way on a PHP board. However, exucez moi...

SaiNt #2: Nice definition of spam

i couple of friedns of mine started calling spam smap, and i get it now! thanks, saint! Im guilty of fice's second thing. i do that a lot when i ask a question and try to fix it on my own.

Ficedula: Version 6 of Ultimate Buliten Board has a ratings system where by members can vote on a scale of 1 to 5 to say how useful / popular whatever a certain member is. Maybe that could be done? :erm:

sorry, it was just so tempting. I agree with the smiley thing, but not that capitalization. My shift sticks. sometimes i dont notice that im typing in caps. Besides, its still completely possible to get a point across in CAPS.

Off topic Edit: Woah.... on the eidos boards theres a person named abyss darkness that has a location similar to mine (look at my From: ) anywho, im not that person. thought you all should know, but wasnt worth making another post.
