Running ff8 in a window.

First off I appologize if this has been asked before but....how can I get FF8 to run in a window instead of fullscreen, as:

1) I tend to switch between games and IE a lot and it's easier to just have a window.

2) It will look nice as the screen won't be stretched to fit a 19 inch monitor anymore.

I have tried using the -w command in the shortcut but that didn't work and did try a search of the forums but haven't found anything.
 
As far as I know, there is no way to get FF8 to run in a window.  I've actually tried this.

Ficedula made a utility for FF7 that allows you to run the game in a window, but its a little buggy.  A similar utility would have to be developed for FF8 as well.

An alternative would be to run the PSX version in an emulator, because you can run ePSXe in a window.
 
Could do but that isn't the PC version. :lol:  :lol:

The only problem is my little brother has destoryed my PSX copy of the game and here in the UK production fo it was discontinued ages ago, so it cost 40-50 pounds on ebay or amazon to get one, or a similar price to have a copy shipped from the US, it just seemed to me an easier way to solve the resolution problem as it would smooth the grpahics a little rather then stretching them to fit higher resolutions.

Ahh well thanks anyway.

Nah I tend not to buy second hand games, they usually break a few days later. :evil:
 
IIRC, the way Ficedula got FF7 to run in windowed mode was editing ff7.exe in Assembly. There's a boolean statement that says something to the effect of:
windowed mode = FALSE
which just had to be switched. It wasn't exactly like that, but you get the idea. If anyone knows Assembly (I don't), give it a try!

Obligatory reminder, in homage to Dagsverre: never change the length of an .exe file.

Yeah I was looking for a way for getting higher reolutions for ff8, but I saw the thread and got scared, so I asked this as this was something else I was after.

Anyways if you do come up with a good result can you let me know and tell me how I can do it, like in propper morons terms. Thanks. :)
 
probably need the same patch as ff7 in terms of fixing DirectX
 
I've had a quick look at FF8.exe in my disassembler and hey - it looks almost the same as FF7.exe.
So running it in windowed mode *should* be possible, however, you've got to give my some time to find that important section in FF8.exe, that I've found in FF7.exe before :)

Yes, ive been wondering about a similiar thing but with FF7. I managed to get the Cetra patch to work but it does have problems. Im thinking, is there a program we can run FF7 and FF8 in? The PS emulator idea isnt too bad but... maybe theres a program for windows emulation or something.
 
Virtual PC is a PC emulator that you could use to run games in a window if you really wanted.  The problem is that it is really slow unless you have a high-end computer with lots of RAM, and it doesn't support 3D accelleration.

I doubt you'll find a Windows emulator that supports 3D accelleration.

The best way to run FF7/8 in a window would be to use the PSX version, or otherwise patch the program so that it runs in a window and not full screen.
