Well, okay, let's forget the flowers.  :)
Pre November 2003 all we had to see was a piece of concept art (airship, skyscrapers and people at the bottom). Nothing else was known about it. So... considering this image was 'released' two years before that (this site gives the date it was first seen: http://www.angelfire.com/fl4/UltimaFF/oldnews.html  - bottom article) we're supposed to have been shown a character render, when we knew nothing about the characters, the setting of the game, or anything else apart from that one concept art? Also have you seen screenshots of ingame/FMVs from FFXII? The style of the world and its characters does not really match that of the girl in the image.
In addition no gaming sites I check have this image hosted (IGN, RPGamer, Gamespot).
 
But the flowers are cool!

Okay, I actually don't really know much about Final Fantasy XII.  I was only pointing out that the picture did not come from Final Fantasy VIII.  But if it was released two years ago couldn't the style have changed since then?

I suppose that could be a possibility, however wasn't it hosted by Square?

Just being hosted by Square makes it Final Fantasy right?

Well, uhm, no, that doesn't prove that the image is fake, only that someone has used that image to create a fake.

I can accept if the image is from Square, it does look like something they'd produce. I'm a bit more sceptical about it being FFXII, though; partly because it's from 2001, partly because the logo looks wrong (like if Final Fantasy is in bold style and XII is not) and different from the FFXII logo text currently displayed on real FFXII images. But it could still be something like a test project from Square's 3D studios, so I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be "genuine". Nor would I be surprised if it's just a nice 3D image and someone thought "hey I can fool people into thinking this is FFXII" and slapped a logo on it.  :P
 
That first one might be fake to. I just noticed she was wearing a see-through skirt, and I don't think that is Square's style.

I could be wrong though.

About the first picture:

I think that someone posted a scan from a magazine with a picture of that girl... I think.
 
What magazine was it Aaron?  I'm pretty sure it's not GMR.

That sounds like a good idea.  Perhaps it is.  "Hey looky at her.  Her skirt is see through and she'll be in the next Final Fantasy :D "
