Could some willing young chap (or chap-ette) write me a specification on the STR movie format. If you want, you can use my PSX doc as a base for it, it's "sorta" in there The format will be helpful in gears....

That bit is reeeeeally important. How you get the information is how you get it, but I can't use Sony's docs. I can use a user generated specifacation based on whatever information that user finds available to him/her, like the source code to an STR player or someone else's specs they can rewrite.
The movie files are encoded via mode2(XA) , this means every sector has an extra 256 bytes that can't be copied normally (I.E. drag and drop from the cd-rom to the hard drive)
That will start you off I think...
