Well it would be a start to tell us which executable wasn't found.  I'll assume ff7.exe
In which case, what are the patching files you are trying to run?  If it can't find the exectutable, then try running it from the program file folder.  Eg, C/Program Files/final fantasy7 and see how it goes.

1) ff7betap1.exe (and the setup file within that archive), the upside-down movie patch
2) truemotion codec and compression toolkit, duck.exe. I got this from http://fem1.uniag.sk/Miroslav.Jezik/ff7ncopam.html as a source. I'm pretty sure I got this link from these forums...

I've already tried running them in the same directory as FF7.exe. I always see an error message stating that the exe could not be found and to check the file path.

The game plays fine in software rendering mode. The opening credits movie is the only thing that I have noticed that fails to play. Also, I uninstalled the XP patch that everybody hates. Is that all I need to do to preserve my system files?

Sorry for the nub questions, again. I have already begun sorting through some of the other pages on this thread, yet I'm still not so sure how some solutions would apply to my nvidia 8800gt. Will changing the video card settings via rivatuner affect my other games?

Hi guys! :-D

I've recently acquired a copy of Final Fantasy VII for the PC after having my PS game "mysteriously disappear".  (Looooong story behind that.) Anyway, after finding out about all these awesome patches and mods, I decided to try a couple out and replay a great game in an even greater quality. I've run into a couple problems though, and I was wondering if anyone could help me out. If similar problems have been addressed before, please forgive me and my inability to wade through the myriad of helpful posts.

My first problem is remarkably similar to Salk's on page 13 of this very thread. I tried playing with the high res patch, and while I have to say that the character models looked sweet and clean, the evident pixelization (Not a real word, I know) of the backgrounds kind of peeved me off. I reinstalled my game and tried playing it without the high res patch at a smaller resolution, and I got kind of a reverse effect. The backgrounds looked nice, but the character models looked all fuzzy. I was wondering if it's possible to get the models looking as clean as they do in the high res patch without creating grid lines or messing with the font.

My second issue is once again touched on in this thread (On page 13, what do you know?) by the user lambie, but no one has answered him. I'll just quote his post:

"At the beginning, where the train just stopped and the guards were attacked, that scene is all black, and then the word bubble "blah blah follow me" shows up, and I hit the menu key and back, everything is back. So I keep on moving forward, when the group is about to enter the reactor building, Cloud turned small and stayed at a corner while the movie plays. I played through the whole stage, and when Cloud was leaving the reactor, some dude fell, and Cloud went to give a hand, then they both freeze at the corner of my screen as the movie plays without sound... I tried to find the problems within the forum, but I just can't find the answer."
I managed to fix the sound issue by turning off the "emulate ramp" option in ficedula, but everything else described in lambie's post applies.

I have a legitimate copy of Final Fantasy VII for the PC, as well as having the 1.02 official patch, the chocobo patch, battle swirl fix and minigames patch, new spell name kernel2 and ficedula's music patch. I'm running on windows XP Home edition with an Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT card. I've chosen maximum installation.

If these issues have been resolved elsewhere, please direct me to them and then whack me over the head with a stick/Banhammer.

Thanks a bunch, and congratulations on making FF7 an even greater game than it already is!

Edit: Alright, alright I'm a complete noob. I found the answer to lambie's problem. Geez, it was even on the first page of the tech support forum. Man, do I feel stupid. My first query still stands, though.

12.HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP(can this program  Riva Tuner help me?)

When i install FF7 and the codec install pops up i click on the yes button to install it and then it minimizes and comes up and error say:

16 bit Windows Subsystem

C;\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The systen file is not siutable for running Ms-Dos and Microsoft Windows Applications. Chosse close to terminate the application.

                 CLOSE           IGNORE

I usually just click on ignore but im not sure whether or not the codecs install or not.....any ideas
Yeah, I've experienced this problem before myself with other applications.

Resolution (from MS):

1. Insert your WINDOWS CD into the CD drive or DVD drive.

2. Click Start, and then click Run.

3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.

4. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command:
Code: [Select]
Code:
expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\config.nt_ c:\windows\system32\config.nt expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\command.co_ c:\windows\system32\command.com
exit

5. Start or install the program. If the issue is resolved, do not complete the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, go to the next step.

6. Note: The Command.com file is not edited or created in this in the following process. Because of this, you may have to expand it from your Windows XP CD-ROM.

Start Notepad.

7. In Notepad, type the following entries:
Code: [Select]
Code:
dos=high, umbdevice=%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\himem.sysfiles=40
8. On the File menu, click Save As.

9. In the File Name box, type Config.nt, and then click Save. Close the Config.nt file.

10. On the File menu, click New.

11. In the new blank document, type the following entries:
Code: [Select]
Code:
@echo off    lh %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\mscdexnt.exe    lh %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\redir    lh %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\dosx    SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 P330 T3
12. On the File menu, click Save As.

13. In the File Name box, type Autoexec.nt, and then click Save. Close the Autoexec.nt file.

14. Start Windows Explorer. Locate the Config.nt file, right-click the Config.nt file, and then click Copy.

15. Right-click the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32 folder, and then click Paste.

16. Locate the Autoexec.nt file, right-click the Autoexec.nt file, and then click Copy.

17. Right-click the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32 folder, and then click Paste.

18. Locate the Command.com file, right-click the expanded Command.com file, and then click Copy.

19. Right-click the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32 folder, and then click Paste. Restart your computer.
Hey, so I have the exact same problem, but when i tried this, it didn't solve anthing, is there another step I'm missing, or what? When I did the first step in the command prompt, for every one it said that it "can not open input file: D:\i386\command.co_."(or whatever the file was). I am not sure if it is supposed to say that, so I did the other steps. And nothing changed. As well, the command.com file, where is that originally, isn't it in system32 folder. Anyways, I would really appreciate help, thank you!

I can't seem to find an answer anywhere,  so sorry if this has been addressed before.

I run Windows Vista 64-bit.  I have a legitimate copy of the Eidos Platinum Collection edition of FF7, and I've properly installed V1.02, Saint's, and as far as I know TruMotion and Laptop Keypad.

Most everything runs fine or at least up to par with everyone else who runs Vista, except that my background is pretty screwed up, but it's not black.  It's horribly, horribly....green.

Opening scene right after train.

First reactor, after naming Barret and FMV looking at reactor.

Also, my Cloud char carried over into at least one FMV, though that really doesnt matter much to me.

Any help would be appreciated.

I've  been having issues with the video playback also.

I am running windows vista.

You need to install the truemotion 2.0 codec

what most people experience are codec and filter interference, if you cant play any of the videos back directly in windows media player then that is your issue.

you can download an app called g-spot, its a codec tool which can be found here " http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ "

when you open that tool you need to open one of the fmv's for the game in the program and check which filters/codecs are being used.

there is a button on the lower left of the window that has the numbers 1 and below that 2 and 3, and also to the right of them 1-3 for audio and 1 and 2 for audio/vid.

once you press 1 under vid you should see the following

"src ->>(A) avi splitter > (B) true motion 2.0 decompressor > (C) video renderer" followed by status not yet rendered.

if it does not show this, you can contact me for a more detailed guide, if this does show proceed to press button 2 and 3 and if the video plays then you are good to go, this should solve all your video playback issues for everyone using vista.

you should only have what looks like this.

Just had to register here to say thank you for all the useful information provided in this thread - I'd all but given up hope of replaying this classic in full anti-aliased glory, but have now finally managed to get it working.

The first problem I encountered was with the intro and cutscenes not working, which I remedied by downloading an installing the Truemotion codec from here (The TM2.0 codec that comes with the game would not install, regardless of fiddling with config.nt and such)

Next up was the dreaded grid lines. Initially I had them with or without FSAA, but installing the official 1.02 patch allowed me to run the game in hardware mode for the first time, however, enabling FSAA made them return and also caused the text to become garbled. None of the Rivatuner solutions worked, what did was installing the High res patch from here.

Now the game works perfectly.

My relevant system info: XP SP3, 8800GT 512MB card with 180.48 drivers.

Hope this is of help to others; I know the information is outlined elsewhere.. but I know from my own experience that it can be very difficult to find the right the solution when there are so many different ones floating around.

Hey all, I'm trying to get FF7 to work on XP 64 pro.  I followed miracle.flame's guide to installing (http://fem1.uniag.sk/Miroslav.Jezik/ff7ncopam.html), following steps 1-5b.  For YAMP I installed minigames patch and 9999 patch.  The movies are displaying properly, the backgrounds seem fine, but the characters are black except for their eyes.  Further, the colors for speech and menu boxes is dull and the sliders for battle speed, etc. are garbled.  As soon as I try to enter the first battle (when the battle swirl should appear), the music hangs and the game crashes.

Now I read that the black characters may be a graphics card issue for 8-series cards (I have an 8800GT), but I couldn't access the debugging link a few pages back.  I uninstalled the NPC reconstruction patch and tried the hand patch instead to see if that would change anything, but it didn't.

Any ideas?

Intel Q6600, nvidia Geforce 8800GT, 4 GB RAM, Win XP 64 pro

Interesting problem.  Running on a laptop

Intel Celeron 1.3 GHz
Intel integrated graphics (82852 GM I think)
1 GB RAM

Now the thing that happens with me is (and it happened with my better desktop as well) is the game runs with no flaws under TNT mode.  However every so often, but not randomly, some scripted animations will slow down to what looks like half speed.  It seems like it just does a clean cut from 60 to 30 fps.  only for a few seconds, until the animation is done.  One specific example is before reactor 2 in the bar and barret does some animation where he points at cloud/himself or something.  Hard to explain.  this ALWAYS slows down.  same thing with some other character animation just before the conversation with president shinra before air buster.

Like I said it isn't random, and its a clean cut, its not choppy or anything, just the animation seems to go to semi-slow mo for maybe 2 seconds tops.  Anyone else have this issue and maybe a fix?  I think I remember I fixed it somehow on my gaming rig:
Dual Core 2.4 GHz AMD64
2 GB RAM
Radeon X1950XT
but I don't remember how I did it x_x.

Hi

The game freeze but the music still plays in cosmo canyon just after Barret say Whoa! Shooting Star.
I was able to skip movies with integrated gypt but when i skip this one i always end up with this still image music and no response from the game.
So if anyone can tell me what i do wrong or get me beyond that movie it would be much appreciated

I'm new here and I'm not sure what I did to my game.  I first stumbled onto this site trying to figure out how to fix a problem I was having in FF7 (game would always crash during one video).

Hoping it might help, I reinstalled FF7 last night as a fresh copy and upgraded using the official 1.02 patch.  The game worked normally last night and today, although I didnt actually play it to the scene that always crashed it.  I pretty much would just start my game to see if it was working right.

I wanted to install the sound fonts for my SB Live card to improve the audio, so I downloaded and installed the Creative driver with the AudioHQ program for loading the soundfonts.  After restarting my computer, the game no longer runs.  I start it, it black screens for about 1 second like its going to start the Eidos intro video, but then just closes out.  I've read through tons of pages and cant figure out how to fix my problem.

This actually happened last night as well, when I tried to "downgrade" from the "XP" patch to the official patch.  It's the reason that I reinstalled anew, which seemed to work just fine.  Would it make sense to try it again?

Hi guys,

I'm literally just about ready to give up, I spent 30 pounds on a Final Fantasy 7 for the PC, and for the life of me I can't get it to work.

First thing my system specs:

Windows XP 32bit Media Center Edition
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.2 GHz
2GB RAM
NVidia 8800GTS 512mb

Ok, I've installed the game and downloaded the 1.02 launcher, set it up to run on Direct3D Hardware Acceleration with the TNT method, the game loads up fine, displaying both the Eidos and Squaresoft movies. I select new game from the title menu and it plays the intro movie fine, but when the train stops at the platform, the screen goes black and I hear the sound effects, and then a text box comes up saying: 'c'mon newcomer follow me.' But the screen remains black and I cannot do anything.

I feel a bit disapointed not being able to play my favorite ever game, if someone can shed some light as to how I can get this working, I'd be extremely grateful.

Cheers.

You found a copy of FF7 PC for £30? That's pretty good...

Anyway, my advice for all crash problems is to try the custom graphics driver, which fixes most of the game's graphical glitches.

However, this particular problem sounds like one I've had before. Press the menu button repeatedly when the screen is black; when I've done this the menu has appeared and the field screen went back to normal when I left the menu.

P.S. - even if that is the solution to this problem, you should still install Aali's driver

Thanks for the fast reply, but I found a video on YouTube which involved the process of installing K-Lite codec and some other bits, and it works 100% fine.

And @ the price, everyone loves ebay :P

Hi There! I'm A new Fan and already playing Disc 2 of these Magnificent game called FFVII.. Well to get things goin :

I would like to answer Raging Demons problem if I can But I would like to ask first if he :

Already installed Aali's graphics driver? Because I did have the same problem with the movie hanging up during Bugenhagen's Real-time Lifestream Movie and "The Date".

But after I installed I finally see the planetarium scene and the continuation to Caith Sith treachery ( spolier Xp). Although I liked the Gypt solution but it spoils the fun for me not knowin what happened next. And of course one problem with his driver is that the Battle Swirl is gone missing for the count. I mean when I enter a battle it suddenly goes black..but the music still playing and after 3 secs. the battle starts. Well that's the only prob you'll encounter, well in my case that is.

So I hope this helps ya...

Add:

By the way I Installed:

1.02 patch
Trumotion codec
Laptop Patch
Aalis Driver the latest
YAMP
Advent Avatars
APZ Battle Model Cloud
Slayersnext Weapon mod
Phoenix Rejuvenation Proj. ( Its the Next one to NPC )
FFVII Music ( Like to hear new battle music every now and then )
Aalis Less debug
The New Spell patch

Laptop specs:

Windows XP Pro 32
Intel Core Duo
Integrated Graphics GMA 950
Normal Laptop Speakers ( realtek audio )

I guess thats it!

Happy Gaming!

i ran some patches and, after bringing up the New Game or Continue options, and hitting New Game, the screen flashes some message like

cant locate  ACFE.aki file i think? it only flashes for a moment and then its gone (then microsoft starts with the whole error report thing)

help please?

specs:

Intel Pentium 4 2.00GHz
1.99GHz, 512 MB RAM

Create the error again and post EXACTLY what it says.  Sounds like one of your files is messed up and you will need to reinstall again...
