Voodoo 2 + FF7; Does this look good?

I'm thinking about buying a voodoo 2 "accelerator" card because I don't get very good results with my ATI radeon 9700 pro in FF7 and nobody could help me there yet.. I've got some questions about this:

1. Does the voodoo 2 work with ATI radeon 9700 pro?
2. Does the voodoo 2 work in windows XP pro?
3. How good do the graphics look with voodoo 2 in FF7? Is it better than Direct 3D? Does it feature Anti-Aliasing? Does it look even better than Direct 3D with AA?

Well, i had a voodoo 3, and based on that...

1) if you mean for dual-monitoring purposes, i think it will.  My roomate used my old voodoo to set up a dual-monitor rig on his system once (before trying it with a better card)

2) Yes and No.  There's not official xp drivers, but you can find some 3rd party ones online, as die-hard voodoo fans have kept up in 3dfx's stead (they folded quite a few years back)

3) FF7 was MADE for voodoos, so it looks best on them.  No garbled text, no cut up backgrounds, smooth animation.. the only downside is that i ever got AA working with that damn card... but maybe you'll find another tweak that'll work.
 
The Voodoo 2 was the first 3D card I owned, so here's info from someone who used one:

1) Yes it should work. (Note the "Should".) The signal from your video card (IE: The Radeon) is taken out of the card, and then plugged into the Voodoo 2. From there, the signal is translated, 3Ded, then taken to the monitor. (NOTE: The Voodoo 2 is an accelerator card, and as such, does not output normal video-card signals, such as displaying Windows, like modern cards do. The Voodoo 2 will not enable you to have multiple monitor setups, as it is simply an accelerator, and not a true video card.)

2) Couldn't tell you for sure, but it works adequetly in a Windows 2000 enviroment, but it's not the best. For best results, use Windows 98.

3a) Graphics look equal to, or in some cases, better than the PSX edition of the game. It also runs the original Half-Life REALLY well at 1024x768! (Note: If you use two Voodoo 2s of the same type and brand, and link together using the included card-to-card link-cable, you can double the power of your card's 3D capabilities.)

3b) Yes and no. GlideFX, the video mode the driver uses, is routed through DirectX 5, using Direct 3D for it's graphics. By modern standards, no, it is not better than Direct 3D, but then again, it's also using a much earlier version of Direct 3D...

3c) The Voodoo 2 does NOT have AA.

3d) Not really... Yeah, it's a bit chunkier, but at a max rez of 640x480, it's not going to matter much. (Plus I get a lot of background problems when I use AA, so...)

I heard the graphics of the PSX version look very ugly..

When you compare it to something modern, yes, it's ugly. On the other hand, there's 8 years of difference in the graphics... Hell, the graphics for FF8 blew FF7 out of the water...

But, they have yet to surpass FF7's story, so it balances out.

PC VS PSX graphics: They're too similar to call a winner, but I think the PC has a slightly higher resolution (640x480) which is probably the one thing the PC has over the PSX, graphically speaking.

It's going to use Direct3D no matter what kind of card you have (unless you set it to software rendering) -- FF7 does not have 3DFX Glide support.
I think there's an old FF7 demo floating around that actually does run in Glide.

It looks great, and without any problems. I was playing it on P200MMX, W95, S3 Trio + Voodoo2 12 MB IIRC.
 
Thank you but it still would be cool if someone could show me screenshots of FF7 running with voodoo 2. Maybe someone can make some?

AGH!

I have that demo on disk somewhere, but i can't find it!  I ahve the battle Aren demo, but that's not the one y'all are lookin for, right?
 
I simply bought a used Diamond Monster 3D II (voodoo 2) for 5.50 euro in the internet. I'll get it soon. Even if it doesn't work with my system, I still can use it because I have a PC for old school games (233 MHz, MsDOS 6.02, Viper 550 and a little hard disk drive) where I could install it.

The only problem I see you having, is getting those old Voodoo2 drivers getting along with the newer DirectX9. If there is going to be a problem....it's going to be with that obsolete V2 driver.
 
I found an inofficial driver for voodoo 2 under windows xp (FastVoodoo XP 4.0). The 3dfx demos work there but FF7 doesn't recognize my Voodoo2.

Yes, but I don't really mind anymore, because I installed Win98SE and everything works fine there with the standard official (old) Diamond Monster 3D II drivers! No lags anymore, there is ANTI-ALIASING (there is anti-aliasing with my Monster 3D II!) and fine graphics. Btw, I am using DirectX 9.
