Which Steam version of FF8?

I want to take advantage of the Steam sale. I already picked up FF7 and have started playing with some mods, but now I want to get the full suite: FF6-9.

So, which version of FF8 is best for modding, or does it matter?
 
The original has a larger library of mods and is pretty much a "known" entity.  The "Remaster" took a bunch of original mods and repackaged them, along with some ongoing adjustments to resource files and DRM, so there are things that work, things that don't, things that one day work, break later, then suddenly work again.
 
Don't bother getting either version until Mcindus' HD background mod for the Remastered version is out, it should hopefully be out in the next 2-3 months. Once it does, that will be the definitive version.
