Yo. Help needed.

Firstly, let's proceed with the premise that I have not been an idiot and been faked.  That's unlikely since the amazon seller has good ratings, and the price was right.

Here is the issue:

I have to remove my USB stick and pop it back in every time I start the comp.  Or I get "Please insert a disk into the drive" 

I am using XP.  After I have done that, the stick (Sony Microvault) works just fine. 

I did delete the "lower filters" at some point a while back, so maybe that's doing it?  My other Kingston stick does not have this issue.

Anyone?
 
Are you saying there's a problem with the usb port or the stick? I'm guessing the port is only usb 2 since you still use xp.
 
check your bios is not attempting to boot from usb before the Hard disk with your OS.

That's my thought too. I had to USB boot in to Ubuntu to get my windows machine working again.
 
I am already loaded when this happens. Windows is fully loaded.  Surely that can't affect normal USB function.  This is a backup pen for transferring files to.-
 
This is a common issue with XP, at last from my experience. It happens to me with windows 7 some times too when my external drive is plugged in.

Yeah, I do have an external drive...  maybe it's conflicting.

@nfitc1   There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the file format.  And this pen is new... I reformatted to fat 32 immediately.  It's looking more like some sort of Windows issue.  Maybe me deleting those filter values from registry did it.
 
If I have problems with USB devices I uninstall the USB device in Device Manager and let Windows search for new devices.
So far I was able to solve all the problems so.
 
Looks like it was the upper lower filters I mentioned.  I deleted them all again, including an additional one that I read had to be deleted.  It reinstalled all devices and now it seems to work.  I had already tried to uninstall USB devices the normal way and it didn't work. 

Microsoft, you suck.

That has nothing to do with the problem, as well you know :)  And given how MS operate, the bug is likely there in Windows 7 and 8, as well.

The reason I use XP is because it does everything I want, and at a fraction of the bloat.

You say that but i have never had an issue with a usb stick in 7 or 8 even. Now i wouldnt suggest windows 8 if you dont like the new menu system but 7 is a very respectable OS that has no more bloat then xp and usually performs better if you hit the minimum system requirements. As for your problem if you havnt tried it on a newer OS then you dont know if thats the issue, do you?
 
98 thru XP have always had issues with USB. These issues were largely fixed with Vista, but I can't recommend Vista.
 
I've never had a problem with USB sticks before with XP.  This is the very first time I've had any real issue with USB at all...

I'll upgrade my OS the next time I buy a new computer, but it is senseless me updating just to be bloated out and have the exact same function as now (with possibly 1 stick working better).  Whatever this issue is, it's fixable.
 
The issue was sony..  When I ran their own formatter, it sorted things out.  But that's just stupid really.  It shouldn't matter if I format using windows to fat 32.  And it should have come formatted to begin with.

Depends. Sometimes there are security chips in these USB drives that only want to work when "activated" or something particular is in storage. I don't get it entirely, but it's akin to something like the FX chip in the SNES games.
 
Or you could upgrade to a semi recent OS... just a thought.

if i could only count the times i have replaced XP with a linux distro .... (hint hint)
