all of my disks are badly scratched, meaning that i have to switch installations per every few hours of gameplay. Battles crash the game on standard install, and some parts of a file (probably flevel) are corrupted on the full version making it necessary to go to standard to get past them. So anyway, is it possible to copy the LGP archives off of another disk (i.e. disk 3)?

Possible, yes. Whether it helps or not is a different matter.

I don't see why it wouldn't work, since it should be the same copy as the one that on your install disk. Otherwise, it wouldn't have a Normal/Full install option.

I, however, will almost NEVER have to worry about my FF7 or FF8 disks being scratched beyond repair. I made copies of them when I first got them, and I only play with the copies. I keep my originals in their boxes. If you can, I suggest doing that, especially if it gets so bad you have to go out and buy a new copy of FF7. (I don't think it would be that much... I usually see it for about $10-$20 in the stores that still carry it...)

Go to a used video game store and give them some cash (five or ten bucks should do), they'll clean the scratches off of your damaged CDs with a DiscDoctor or similar device. Without going into too much detail, these devices basically shave off the damaged fine layers of plastic on the CDs (thinner than strands of hair), without making contact with the data area of the CD itself.

If you do this, your CDs will be as good as new.

hehe, thats not necessarily true. my friend accidently got a peice of dirt in one of those and it ruined the cd.

A computer store around here has that device (or something like it).  I've only heard good things about it.

Five or ten bucks could buy you a new FF7 too, though.  One of my CDs is messed up (disc 1 - came this way) but the game runs fine if I use the full install.  I'm REALLY careful with all my CDs.

works fine on full install, im just hoping ill get past my next scratch....

I've heard some good things about them, and I've seen then and read the box, but I've always wondered what happens when they get scratched again. Each time you go deeper and deeper, eventually, you're gonna end up layering off your data!

That's my problem with those types of devices... Limited use before they actually cause damage...

But it's good that you got it working!

Actually, you don't need to do a full install.
After running the standard install, copy the other files from the rest of the CD's. The files are duplicated in every CD just in case you didn't notice.

After that, fire up regedit and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareSquare Soft, Inc.Final Fantasy VII
Look for the key FullInstall
Dblclick on it and change the value 1

There's actually some way you can make it run the movies and stuff off the hard drive without having to use the CD.  You have to change the CD path in the registry for FF7 and rename your hard drive to like "FF7Disc1" "FF7Disc2" etc (or I think you can crack it so that you don't have to rename your hard drive).

That way, as long as your hard drive stays in tact, your game is safe

This takes up quite a bit of space if you don't have a huge hd though.

saint-> i figured something like that would be possible, just never really looed into it.

Disc Doctors don't always work...my nephews have scratched some CD's beyond working, we get a Disc Doctor, and then they are playable, but the music would be choppy or absent.

well,  that makes sense, if you scrape a 1 mm deep line across a disc, its a frisbee.

I'm telling you, go buy a new copy of FF7 then make copies and play the copies! That's the BEST way to preserve your FF7 discs! (I do the same thing to FF7 & 8 too!)

yeah, now i need to find more time to play it. finals coming up....blah.

My FF7 discs are scratched up pretty bad too (Still work though).  I should have done what you did Sephiroth 3D, when I bought the game.  I guess I'll just have to empty my wallet and go and spend to $10 to get a new copy. :)

I really hate to sound like the big whiner of this forum but i have another problem with FF7. It seems at the very beginning of the game after i get off the train the game just crashes. I use Win2000/NT could that be a problem?

It might be, but it could also be the disc.  Did you do a full install?  or just a typical install?  Do a full install and see if it works.  Otherwise I don't know.  I've heard a lot of people say they've had problems running FF7 on Win2000.
