Thanks for replying. I was able to find the most current version of Aali's custom driver so I'm going to try it out. I was running the game 1.02 patched with the US version.

I was using Windows 7 64 bit.

The problem I had with not being able to re-install turned out to be a program conflict. It kept giving me an error about not being about to read a language file. I was able to solve it by going through a clean boot process.

I will try it again with the newest version of the custom driver and let you guys know how it goes. The save game thing I really can't explain. I didn't install any other mods - before I put the music driver on there the save files were there, and after they weren't. I might suggest making a copy of them just to be safe in the future?

Thanks for the help! I'll update soon.

Adam

I got the game working again but same set of problems. The music doesn't double up anymore but the game still doesn't recognize any setting changes in the .cfg file. It sticks to the default resolution settings no matter what. I also tried changing other settings in the .cfg file to see if it make any difference but it didn't. Any ideas? Here's the contents of the .cfg file as I'm using it.

# ff7_opengl-0.7.10b config file

## USER OPTIONS ##
## If you just want to play the game, these are the only options you'll want to change.

# set the window size (or fullscreen resolution) of FF7
# 0 means use original resolution (whatever ff7.exe provides)
# preserve_aspect adds black borders as needed to preserve a 4:3 aspect ratio
window_size_x = 1280
window_size_y = 720
preserve_aspect = no
fullscreen = yes

# mod directory
# subdirectroy of mods/ where textures will be loaded from
# does not affect the old external textures feature, those should still go in textures/
mod_path = none

# check your driver settings if this option doesn't seem to work
enable_vsync = yes

# limit snowboard, coaster and highway minigames to refresh rate / 2, i.e. 30fps for a 60hz display mode
# vsync must be enabled and working for this to have any effect
minigame_framelimiter = on

# same thing, but for the battle swirl
battleswirl_framelimiter = off

# allow FF7 to use linear filtering for its textures
# some things look slightly better with this option on, but alot of textures just lose their detail
linear_filter = off

# plugin used to play music, the FF7Music plugin MUST be enabled for FF7Music to work.
# If no music plugin is loaded the game will play MIDI as usual but FF7Music will NOT work.
music_plugin = plugins/ff7music.fgp

## ENHANCEMENTS ##
## All the little extras that weren't part of the original game, default options include only trivial bug fixes.

# make all dialog boxes transparent, same effect as the transparent dialog boxes YAMP patch
transparent_dialogs = on

# allow max hp/mp to go over 9999, same effect as the YAMP patch by dziugo
break_9999limit = no

# include armor in magic defense calculation
mdef_fix = yes

# expand battle viewport to cover entire screen and make the battle menu transparent
new_battle_interface = off

# post-processing shader, used to apply fullscreen effects
post_source = shaders/bloom2.post
enable_postprocessing = no

## ADVANCED OPTIONS ##
## Don't fiddle with these unless you know what you're doing.

# use shaders, if available and supported
# turn shaders off to use the OpenGL 1.1 backend
use_shaders = yes

# prevent glitches due to rounding errors by rendering in the nearest (larger, if supported)
# multiple of the original resolution and up/down-scaling
prevent_rounding_errors = yes

# enable alpha blending for textures without an existing blending effect
fancy_transparency = on

# display frames per second counter in upper right corner
show_fps = no

# display some real-time debug information
show_stats = no

# store external textures in a compressed cache for increased performance
# compression is not lossless, some artifacts may appear when this option is in use
# texture cache does NOT update automatically if the source image changes, however, deleting anything from the cache
# will cause that file to be recreated from the source
compress_textures = yes

# use pixel buffer objects to speed up texture loading
# will probably crash horribly on ATI cards but should work for NVIDIA users
use_pbo = no

# replace FF7's default framelimiter timer source
use_new_timer = yes

# use a more stable (but less accurate) timer to control FF7's framelimiter
# this option has no effect unless the use_new_timer option is on
use_stable_timer = no

# plugin used to play movies, FFMpeg is the only choice for now
movie_plugin = plugins/ffmpeg_movies.fgp

## MODDER OPTIONS ##
## These options are mostly useful to modders and should not be enabled during normal play.

# read files directly instead of using LGP archives
# for example; if FF7 is looking for aaab.rsd in char.lgp, this option will make it open direct/char/aaab.rsd first,
# if this file doesn't exist it will look for the original in the LGP archive
direct_mode = off

# show every failed attempt at loading a .png texture
show_missing_textures = no

I think Aali's driver may not be installed right. It may be related to "Virtual Store", a stupid feature in Windows Vista and 7 that I don't fully understand, but is related to UAC. You may be able to find more help in the troubleshooting thread for Aali's driver. Come back here if you still have problems once you get that working.

Ok I will read into it. One thing I should mention is that prior to installing the music driver, the game was properly re-configuring the resolution and aspect ratio to reflect what I put in the .cfg file. It was only after I put the music installer in that there were problems. I'll keep reading and thank you for the help so far - I know it's on your free time! :)

Wow interesting! I should have looked into it further.

So I read in the trouble shooting thread on Aali's driver and someone mentioned he couldn't make resolution changes. He then said that he had compatibility mode turned on.

I looked at mine and mine was setup the same way. The ff7.exe. was in compatibility mode even though I didn't set it up that way.

Once I unchecked it and started the game, the FF7music installer properly started the game, the game ran in the resolutions that I wanted, AND the lost save games suddenly reappeared! Weird eh? The FF7Music player seems to be running because the MIDI sounds different, although I don't know if my original problem has been solved yet.

This has been an interesting problem to troubleshoot. I will update on whether the sound level problem with the FMV's worked or not.

Thanks!

Adam

Yeah, my installer sets compatibility mode. On most machines, ff7music doesn't work right without it, but on some it doesn't work right with it. I'm still trying to figure out why that is, and if there's a workaround I can use that'll work for ALL machines.

This does further my suspicions that it's related to UAC, though. I wonder if it's trying to read things from a different directory in compatibility mode? I'll look into it, anyway.

A minor quibble...

You need to add exclusion from resuming to the game over and sleep music.

Sleep music doesn't play at all when using FF7Music with Aali's driver, but I'll add it anyway. The other one, too.

I'm honestly surprised they weren't already in there. I grabbed the list from the old, old ff7music thread of which songs needed to be excluded, figuring the guy who wrote it knew what he was talking about. I guess I shouldn't assume things :(

sorry to bother, but it's two days that i try to download from rapidshare and it's impossible. download go strangely slow and never reach the end. i also tried to use some download program but it's useless.

unluckly i have already used the minimal install and the only result was to cancel all the music from the game so now i really need the full install.

Can you plase upload it somewere else?

Rapidshare have decided to fuck over free users with really low speed limits as of a couple of days ago, I used to get my max speed (~2,000KB/s) now I get 30 to 40KB/s, you also can't resume downloads any more either.

Looks like Mediafire or Dropbox is the way to go.

@DragonNinja:We should talk about an alternative for all files + Backup system.
                         File hosters could vanish suddenly (like MegaUpload).
                         Or they decide to allow only the owner to access the files.

                         I am open for suggestions.

                                               space limit / max. size per file
                         MediaFire    :      none                200 mb
                         Dropbox      :       2 gb                  ?
                         Google docs:       1 gb                  ?
                         Skydrive      :     25 gb                100 mb

Edit 1 (02/18/2012):

This info is shown by JDownloader when trying to download from RapidShare.

Dropbox is no good. This thing gets too many downloads, it regularly uses around 10GB bandwidth daily. Since Dropbox has a 10GB limit for public links on free accounts, it'd lead to an account suspension within a few days.

I might end up paying for hosting for this thing. I have something in mind that would be better with fast, ad-free hosting anyway.

EDIT: I'm so nub for posting this in the first place, read the bottom edit to see if you are amused :).

First of all, massive props to the people involved in this, it's brilliant. I am however, like a few people are, encountering problems

So I installed FF7Music (full) and all was working fine, albeit a wee bit delayed. All of a sudden, specifically at Holzoff's cabin, the music stops altogether!

I've tried reinstalling, using the PSFs, checking all my settings(FF7Music, Aali's driver) and as far as I'm aware nothing seems to have changed.

I know Aali's driver is configured because I'm also using the Avalanche 2D Overhaul mod, and have done since before installing FF7Music.

As you can see I also fought some battles to see if that would kick-start the music like it did for some others.

Thanks if you took the time to read this.

EDIT

I'm playing on my laptop. plugging into my TV via HDMI and for some reason my TV speakers automatically mute FF7Music, but not FF7, hence the reason why sound was working but music wasn't.

PROBLEM RESOLVED!

With MegaUpload gone, and RapidShare slowed down lately, I put some thought into how I was going to host this. I found a good solution (it's costing me a bit, but it's worth it), and figured that there's no better way to celebrate than with a
NEW VERSION: 1.51.13

Main Download (Ad-supported, helps pay for hosting)
Alternate Download (no ads, more guilt)

This was such a monumental update that I actually ended up having to rewrite the NSIS install script from scratch. Don't worry, the launcher and ini file that make it worth while should still work fine.

Changelog

  • Only one installer now. The remastered OST is now downloaded on-the-fly by the installer. If you already have it (or don't check the box) it'll be skipped. If you MUST have it pre-downloaded (such as for archival on a CD), it can be found at this link here (or here without ads). Just stick it in the same folder as the installer before you run it, the rest is automatic.
  • If an internet connection is available, the installer will check for updates on startup.
  • If an internet connection is available, the FF7 launcher will check for updates on startup.

This is a recommended upgrade. It won't make much difference now, since I didn't touch the ini, but it'll make future, more important updates easier to deliver.

edit: Also, since so much has been changed, let me know if something breaks for you. It's always easier to fix bugs when they're reported :D

Just a note for everyone out there: Please click the links for the ads as it is helping Covarr with hosting costs for this as opposed to the ad free ones. It takes 5 seconds of your time and is much better then having these files hosted on mediafire or another free host.

Just a heads up, I can confirm this currently DOESN'T work on Windows 8 Consumer Preview. I already have a pretty good idea what's wrong, so an update may be coming soon. Chances are it won't affect you, unless you're an early adopter, though.

This is also a good chance for me to get some wider-scale testing of the auto-update feature! I'm so excited.

ok im having some problems with this mod. its not playing the mp3 during the fmv's. i think it has something to do with the fmv restoration mod also. has anyone gotten both of these to work together?

It is nothing to do with both.  Either you are having compatibility issues or you have not installed aali driver/config properly.
