FF8 Black blocks

The main reason why 8bit pallet isn't a concern with FF7 is because Eidos released an 8bit bypass patch.... called the TNT patch. FF8 never got such a patch. You're at the mercy of the video drivers as far as Hardware mode is concerned.

However FF7 has video and audio codec problems. FF7 depends Window's programs and drivers to work. Seems that when these things get updated (probably automaticly without your knowledge), FF7PC pretty much breaks.

I figure this to be true, because with a fresh install of WindowsXP, my copy of FF7PC works perfectly. But after about a month of normal computer use. I noticed major audio garble, and framerate slideshow pauses during FMV's and Battles, afterwards.

About the only thing you can really do is go back to the old technology, and play the game on an old Pentium or something with a Voodoo2 card.

hm count me in as one of the victims too :weep: hm someone has to make such a patch as the one for FF7, it takes away the 8-Bit just threesixty said. But i dont think there are much people who can do such a thing.

On the nvidia forum is currently running a topic about the issue, i hope that if the topic stays on fire that nvidia would stand up and create a patch.
but i guess that are only dreams :weep:

The lack of support for 8-bit Palleted Textures is not what causes the black boxes in FF8.  While the black boxes do seem to be an issue with later graphics cards, I have a number of cards (my old TNT2 and GeForce4...  I think the Radeon 9800 as well) that fail 8-bit Palleted Textures and run the game just fine.  (Unlike FF7, FF8 still allows you to select Direct3D if 8-bit Palleted Textures fails.)

Although yeah, NVIDIA could probably fix the black box issue with a driver update if they felt like it.

hmm guess that will be the problem, don't think nvidia wants to put any effort in making such a patch. On the other hand if many people will gather in the Final fantasy 8 topic, maybe they will do it, for their reputation among the gamers:) i don't know if i may post a link to that thread.... But i think if all FF8 players would gather in that thread, we have better chances for getting such a patch.

Nvidia forums--> search for: Final Fantasy VIII

i say, let here your voice in there

You could always:

1: Create an online petition
2: Gather your Final Fantasy resources (message boards, fan sites, etc) & attempt to get supporting individuals to sign it.
3: Write a big butter-up e-mail to Nvidia requesting they please implement support for 8-bit P.T. in the drivers and link to the petition showing interest.

Best of luck with this, guys. I have a Radeon 9800 Pro like Aaron mentioned & don't have any problems with it.

Hello I am brand brand new in this forum! You guys are great keeping FF7 and FF8 alive by fixing what eidos and EA never bothered to. Anyways I have FF8 and I have the same damn problem since I have a 6800 GT. Anyone know if the latest ATi cards work better? If so I need to get me one like right now....  :o

^^^ you're thinking backwards...
You need to go to older cards and DirectX5.1, not newer ones.

Really, the easiest option would be to buy a PS2.

Or pick up a second hand PSX and game copy from Gamestation for £10 :D.

Why is everyone so concerned about playing in hardware mode? I got a 6600GT a while back and it did the black blocks thing, so I just play in software mode. There is no difference, apart from some of the blending in menu backgrounds looking a little nicer in hardware mode. On a modern pc there is really no performance hit running in software, so why all the moaning?

*Shrug*

Well, whatever. I'm happy with both 7 and 8 running in software, it's not as though it makes a real difference. Unless... it's an ego thing? "Oh noes! I have this uber expensive graphics card that I can't use because the drivers don't support the game properly! I must get this working to avoid my ego being bruised!" In which case, I pity you.

This isn't particularly aimed at any one person BTW, so don't take it as such. It's just kinda silly the lengths people will go to to get the precious hardware mode working on older, unsupported, games like this.

Well Actually is not an ego thing... When you run it on software mode the game is as pixelated as it was on the PSOne with the different of higher resolution. I thought that if I bought an Nvidia card I would be able to run the game with shader and all that but sadly it didn't, but oh well.  So yeah its because of the shaders not an ego thing so much. Although if you made a decision on a card with a game in mind and then it doesn't work out you'd be pissed too.
