I will be releasing an updated version of this mod for use with Shunsq's new controller mod!  Coming soon! (seriously lol)
 
I am using a 360 controller,

when i first played the game my escape from battle buttons were the left and right stick buttons. I messed around with the configs for a little but now I cant reset, every time I press right stick it exits the config and every time I press left stick it resets to defaults.

I suspect I am missing something obvious here as there must be a way to map these buttons (seeing as they were in the original layout) but I cant for the life of me figure it out.

Any idea whats going on?

hey mcindus, i just downloaded and installed the Lunatic Pandora and i donated via paypal.  Everything looks great but still want some want install the xbox controller button.  I downloaded the xbox360 buttons and i copied the "sy" folder from it to the texture folder in FF8/texture but it asked if it wanted to replace it not merge.   I tried either way but every time i open the game and go to config/controller it still says "b1,b2,b3" etc.  Wondering if you can help me out.

Are you using the English version of the game?  If you are, are you using a standard controller or?  It should be fine to replace the contents of the folder, so you did fine there.

Also, do you have two FINAL FANTASY VIII/ folders or just one? if you have FINAL FANTASY VIII/FINAL FANTASY VIII/, or you have the mod installed on the wrong drive,  take all of the contents from the duplicate folder and drop it all into the main
/steamapps/common/FINAL FANTASY VIII/ folder.

can you show me a screenshot of your FINAL FANTASY VIII/ folder, your /tonberry folder, your tonberry/hashmap/ and your /textures/sy folder?

Hello mcindus,

I am also having the same problem as well but with the psx and psx hid buttons. I have checked and rechecked to make sure I installed them correctly as per the installation notes. But all mappings still read as 'b1 b2' etc.

Maybe i'm not getting the part about what controllers are compatible with this mod? I'm using a Hori mini ps4 game pad model PS4-100U

Would I need to use an actual xbox controller or ps3/ps4 controller and something like ds4tool or motionjoy to see the change?

yeah i am using the english version. technically im using an xbox one controller instead of a 360 but i dont think that would be an issue.  i think i have one on my C drive and one on D.  Would have to double check.  But here are the screen shots!

You have to put all of the contents of the C:/FINAL FANTASY VIII/ folder into the REAL 'FINAL FANTASY VIII/' folder that contains the FF8_EN.exe file.
So that last image you posted has everything, but all of that needs to be moved into your -real- FF8 parent folder.  Mine is in steamapps/common/FINAL FANTASY VIII/
 
Actually, I made a bit of headway and did some troubleshooting myself.

Installing the regular psx buttons and not the 'hid' one has replaced the b1 b2 b3 etc with the pictures of the buttons.(installing the HID download doesnt replace anything with either controller) I only have one problem my X and O buttons are swapped. I tried using my PS4 controller and DS4tool as well as my Hori Minipad PS4 wired controller, both doing the same thing X and O are swapped.

Is it because I changed the default button mappings for select from default square to the X button, and the card game default button to square?

In other words i changed the Select command from button 1 to button 2, Card to from default button 3 to button 1,  Menu from default button 2 to button 4, and cancel remained default button 4

I did this so that it matches the original psx ff8 buttons where menu is O and X is select, /_\ is cancel and [] is card game. also so that zells limit also matchs the psx version (punch rush is OX etc)

thats also the only thing i have tested seeing the buttons on, zells limit. when i go to do punch rush its XO instead of OX and also XO is the incorrect input for punch rush and i have to actually press circle X

sorry if this was any at all confusing, It was very hard to explain in detail for me.

Hey McIndus - I use the FF7 button layout.. triangle (menu), x (select), circle (cancel), square (switch). Do you have a layout that would align with this?
 
JUST UPDATED THE MOD to v2.0!!!

This version is now fully compatible with Shunsq's FF8 Button mod!!!

This version should also have ALL OF THE FIXES REQUESTED OVER THE YEARS!!!

I've struggled for tens of hours trying to get my controls to "perfectly" match the PSX's control scheme, to no avail, probably because of something trivial. Instead I have created a Steam Controller Config for a more "traditional" setup (e.g. Triangle is Menu).

Can someone please send me a good keyboard mapping free program for the controller? I'm using the ps3 controller with the Scptoolkit and I need to map the keyboard for playing with bluestacks android simulator. Thanks in advance!

Try Antimicro https://github.com/AntiMicro/antimicro/releases I use it for alot of Steam games without controller support and it works pretty well.
 
Tonberry is OK, SeeD is OK, since I can see the graphic change when I load up FFVIII, but sadly my 360 controller does not work even with 2.0.

Can anyone help? Not a big fan of playing in KB/M games such as this one.

I'm using your mod and all works good, but my d pad still doesn't work, i would like to play with analog AND d pad, i tried with joytokey like i do with ff7, but it's look like that ff8 ignore joytokey so i can't use my d pad :/
Any solution for this?
 
use the image above as a guide. With ff8 on steam it has steam controller support so if you follow that post youll be able to get both your dpad and joysticks to work. It worked out of the box for me with my DS4 controller and 360 afterglow.
