I was able to extract the texture from the original game.

I think is possible to update the textures using Deling. It is able to repack almost everything.

The main problem is the disposition of your textures. while you have two layers, ES had rendered more than two layers, I had attached the extracted textures so you can work on proper mods.

please check this files. If you could reposition the skins, we can be able to finally import HR skins to the game using Deling!!!

the textures that you send me (SE textures) are the same of the original pc game in I worked.

this is a field model texture its for that reason of all parts are in a one layer.
and my textures are for the battle models (ff8 the battle models used 2 texture files for the models)
anyway some time ago I edited some battles textures for convert in field textures, look this:

should be work in the game!
I adapted the quistis and selphiie texture too!

its for battle model and my texture is  equal, but the SE texture have the weapon texture above.
so the solution its simple consist in paste my texture over the SE texture, like this:

well. is possible for you to submit the field.fl file? i know is a HUGE file, but that file (or main.fl?) contains all the textures for the characters. If you successfully embedded the HR graphics into the fl file, please record it on a video tutorial. I'm very sure this will save time for many of us.

also, some remarks of my last stream:

In short, what happened on the last stream confirms three things:

1. on Steam Version, you can modify the Audio using Roses and Wine, but you cannot add/modify or extract textures. the process is too complicated and I gave up after 3 hours of work and research. EAX library is the main problem, plus is not accepting aali's OpenGL driver.

2. The 2000 version, you can add custom textures and HR fonts, but you cannot use Roses and Wine. You can use aali's OpenGL Driver to add your graphic customizations.

3. Megachocobo's High Resolution Textures does not match the textures embeded in the game. please check this file with the megachocobo's textures vs SE textures, way too different : http://www.mediafire.com/download/8akdzr93hjnhv59/texture comparison.rar

So we are in a checkmate here. we need a developer that may go into what is not allowing the OpenGL driver to be loaded by the steam game, so all the mods can be added without problems.
 
I'm not sure if Aali can help on this. You can give it a shot since he is preparing his next driver release for the ff games though I find it unlikely he will reply...

Let me know how you do it. It is very important! I intend to make a video tutorial on your mod. If you have difficulties speaking english, I also speak spanish.
 
If steam FF8 is like steam FF7 then it is using DirectX and not OpenGL.  The proof in this was the shader files for FF7 which are in FX format and using PS2_0 which only allows a small instruction count.  So I side loaded my own DirectX DLL for FF7 and that worked, which furthered the proof FF7 was using DirectX now for the steam version. 

A custom openGL driver for steam FF7 therefore is impossible.  I have a feeling the same for FF8.  What we can do is compile our own DirectX but to what end, I don't know.  Check out SweetFX for examples of side loading your own directX DLL.
 
I have a ff8 steam version. So how to install this char texture mod? I cannot find.
 
I only revive this topic because Omzy has written a tool to replace the textures for FF8. It would be nice if someone would try out Tonberry v1.0 on his steam game and tries to replace the character textures.

It won't happen overnight, but eventually it will get done. In the  mean time, you can enjoy that "kid in a candy store" excitement you're having  :)
 
I wonder this works and finally view the textures in the game!
I promised not play ff8 until the textures were integrated XD
 
soon I upload the models with my textures in low  resolution that work in the game but loss details.
It would still look way better than the original model textures. Im all for it. Cant wait for the release. Good job guys. Keep it up and dont let us wait too long, lol. I'm so excited. You should really go ahead and put out an alpha release or something :P (Same size looks good enough, the difference is huge and a WIP release would really make a lot of people happy, me included, lol)
