Well, after some playing around, I finally figured out why I couldn't get FF VII running in WINE on OS X.  Any version of Aali's driver past 0.7.6b won't work (at least not on my hardware).  Any of them with the modified FF7Config says "Could Not Initialize OpenGL, Driver Probably Will Not Work", but it will if you use any version before 0.7.7b

Now my only problem (unrelated) is getting FF7Music to not crash when it changes songs

Otherwise, OS X is now my perfect OS

try covarr's installer, w/ ogg or psf  , this is how i have manged to get it working on my linux box. before that it would crash after song change.

Yeah, that's what I tried, but I'm going to try a few other things before I go back to that again.

Hello, I'm having a problem with FF8 Movies using Aali's driver.

In app.log appears this

"GLITCH: NPOT texture support is required for movies to work"

Is there anyway to watch the movies without having NPOT support? and, not using fullscreen.

Hi, this is my second try at patching something on the PC, so I'm not sure exactly what I'm doing wrong. I got FF7 to work just fine but FF8 Configurator (I'm using Samuel's) is giving me a error message, saying 'Failed to load custom driver,' so I can't even open it now. The original FF8 Config can be opened but only has a primary display driver.

Can someone help me out please? Thanks!

You have to put "ff7_opengl.fgd" in the same folder where FF8 is installed, that should solve your problem.

Just tried as you suggested. Doing that gave me this message:

"Exception EAccessViolation in module FF8Configurator.exe at 00001F68.
Access violation at address 00401F68 in module 'FF8Configurator.exe'.
Read of address 00001058."

I think it has something to do with the eax.dll file. If I delete it I can get into the configurator but there's still no custom drive option.

Try installing EAXUnified and you don't have to put Custom Drive like in FF7 in FF8Configurator, just configure it in ff8opengl.cfg file.

Well, 0.7.8b Suddenly decided to start playing nice with WINE.  Now if only I could replicate this process so I could write a tut.

Now, I'm down to this issue with FF7Music.  You removed the WINE version of the helper, because it was no longer needed as of WINE 1.1.35, which is great, since it caused FF7Music to crash for me anyway.  However, when I use the helper you have now, it doesn't even TRY to play the soundfiles I'm using with FF7Music.

I already have it installed. What should I change in ff8opengl.cfg?

The fake eax.dll breaks FF8Configurator? Nice find, I never would have figured that out myself. It will be fixed in the next version.

You need that eax.dll in the same directory as FF8.exe for the driver to work though. Thats also the only thing you should need aside from having installed the real EAXUnified. There's no config option that needs to be enabled for the driver to work in FF8.

Real and fake?

I removed the FF8Configurator and all off its added components from the program folders for now, so I'm just using the original FF8Config. I do have EAXUnified installed and the eax.dll is in there but I'm still have trouble with crashes and occasionally lag. Rebooting usually fixes this but there's this one spot that I can't seem to get past no matter how many times I try.

Hey there. I am still getting the wind.wav error at the Dyne scene. It hasn't crashed my computer (yet), but it has slowed everything WAY down. At this rate, it will take me an hour to get through the conversation/fight if it lets me. It still shows the classic "ERROR: could not read from file C:\Program Files\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII\Data\music\wind.wav" garbage.

For giggles, I went into FF7Config and switched to the default graphics driver and was able to get past the Dyne part, but then it crashed at the Chocobo race...

I really don't want to have to uninstall/reinstall everything again.

any chance of incorporating the openGL driver settings into FF7config? As far as interface goes, the only thing i see missing is a n00b friendly way to adjust the driver setting.

Im also happy to report i haven't had any issues with crashing w/the latest version of the driver.

Its already planned, actually. I just never got around to it. Its alot of work for something that doesn't benefit me other than keeping the noobs at bay.

You could simply write your own static linked FF7config prog.It just sets a few registry keys
and is very picky if they got wiped out or if no waveout or MIDI device is found.
With a new ff7config a noob can move his ff7 directory around or start the game via a linux livecd and Wine.

Hello. I'm new but I'll try to not be stupid.  :|

I was having a crash and I searched high and low to find Qhimm.com. I wasn't expecting something like this, let alone something that is still being used by other people ...  :o The crash I was having is unrelated to the crash I am having now, and I searched this forum and found that it could probably be fixed by installing aali's drivers. Well the thread said by updating them but I hadn't installed them yet so I tried to do that.

I downloaded the latest drivers, I think they are 0.7.8, and I ran FF7Config, went to the graphics tab to select Custom Drivers and I get a crash.

AppName: ff7config.exe
ModName: atioglxx.dll
ModVer: 6.14.10.10188
Offset: 00087ad7

"The instruction at 0x5ed2aed8 referenced memory at 0x00000564. The memory could not be read.
Click on OK to terminate the program"

I searched around to no avail. Needless to say I am at a loss and am not sure what to do.

I've searched around and seen some interesting responses, but I'll tell you straight off the bat that I have an ATI HD3850 and definitely support OpenGL. I just wanted to get that out of the way.

I read something about a crash.dmp and app.log but I don't see any crash.dmp file and APP.txt is 0kb of completely empty.

Any help?  :o

I installed Final Fantasy VII and applied the 1.02 patch. Then I installed Aali's Drvier, turned of full screen and set the resolution to 720x480. Whenever I load up this is what I see.

Davikar:
Its a known problem, turn off DEP for FF7Config and it will work. Already fixed for next release.

kiteswitch:
Weird stuff, do you have a cfg.log? You should have it but it might be empty.
