well, the normal 2D backgrounds will look the sam no matter what you do(until someone re-does them/if ever).  The driver really shines in battles and on the world map. try cranking up the res and turning all your GFX settings to max and tell me you dont see a difference in battles from the stock settings.
lee
Yes, I didn't think of that.  Brian Fart.  Thanks! and yes, the 3d battle looks waaay better than it did on PS!

About Vista... I never had much problems with Vista (even 64 bit). Only problem was in the beginning where there were only few 4 bit drivers out there.
And I don't really see the problem many have with UAC turned on. Sure it is sometimes annoying, but well, it works totally fine for me (Given, I am running Windows 7)

Anyway, those Custom Driver really rock. I'm really loving them!

These drivers are awesome! (Thanks Aali)  Finally I can play in a Window and get some FF7 time in at work :)

My only issue, is that I see some intense flickering whenever there's 2D overlay graphics/transparencies.

For example, in Corel Prison town, there's a few scenes with sunlight rays that are laid across the scene.  These sunlight rays flicker violently in intensity from barely there to almost-opaque very quickly (I like to call it "seizure mode").   In battle, on the world map, etc, everything is perfect and I don't see any glitches.   But these overlays of sun rays or light effects seem to happen pretty often, and can be quite hard on the eyes and really takes away from the ambience of the game.

Has anybody seen these issues?

(I'm running on a Dell Latitude D620 with Intel 945GM, on Windows XP SP3.  For the sake of trying to fix these issues I've turned shaders on and off in the config file, as well as attempting to disable post processing.   Also this issue seems to happen in all resolutions, and happens in fullscreen as well as windowed).  The Dell Drivers for the 945GM don't have a 3D options panel unfortunately, so I can't modify anything on that side.

It does sound like an issue with your graphics card/drivers, specifically Intel has serious issues with some setups. Disabling shaders usually works through, but I see you've already tried that. Update your drivers, tinker with different settings, see if you get lucky.

Tried some newer drivers from Intel.. had to force the install over the Dell modified drivers.. and still, flickers like mad.

I've tried the extra 3d settings (now that I have a 3d settings panel) described by Mindrip here: https://www.ff7catalog.com/posts/115833/

And still.. flickers :(

I'm hoping I can get a response by Mindrip, maybe his ff7 cfg file will fix this for me.

Aali, it's been a while I've been asking this.... and yet got no answers from you.
What are the chances for you to implement the 'direct mode' thing (bypass .lgp) for the ff8 files (.fs .fi .fl)?
I'm really willing to use this feature as I'm messing with ff8 files, it would really speed up my tests.

Outlook not so good.

FF8 does not have the same structured file API and it doesn't really treat the archives as a regular file tree like FF7 does.
Besides, there are way more important things to do with FF8.

Ohh bad news.  :-(
I guess I'm stuck with unpacking/packing files.
Thanks anyway.

when i run this at 1440x900 resolution, i get lines on backgrounds! is there a way to fix this?

Weirdly enought, I also can't seem to run it without your driver, the game starts, play the Eidos FMV, then crashes.
I'll try to get another ff8.exe to see if it solves the problem, but I'm not at my pc now, may try that later.
Thank you.

Please someone help. My FF8 crashes at Laguna Dream (First one), as soon as I switch screen it gets unhandled exception. I'm using Windows XP.. check APP.LOG and crash.dmp for more info. I think it also crashes at Laguna Dream if I attempt to go to menu (Junction, Item, Magic, GF etc..) I also provided save file. (Last save slot)

Crash.dmp APP.LOG and save -> http://www.speedyshare.com/497893381.html

Hopefully someone can help :)

PS something small about FF7: I also had a crash once in FF7 Last battle when you just wait for your limit meter to fill up, but that was only once. That occured almost right after the movie sequence ended, I'd say like 2 seconds. FF7 with the driver worked flawlessly in everything else and I really love this driver, hopefully I'll get FF8 to play smooth too :)

EDIT: Without the driver, it works fine. Also it seems like its not about the screen switching, but more like because of a battle event. I tried to use a debugger to sort out the problem, but couldn't really detect anything.

That's not supposed to happen AFAIK. Also I had no problems at all getting past the first dream sequence.

I just wanna to say thanks for this great little driver  :-D

Makes FF8 totally playable on Linux, with much better performance than in a crappy Win7

Thanks a lot!

(I've not yeat reached the Laguna part, I'll let you know what happens to me)

Hmm yeah, funny thing though it works without the driver.. Any ideas Aali? What could I do?  :-(
Does it load gwenter1.sfx from the CD or Hard drive? how to check if its inside?
I also tried to do everything with the opengl config file, but no luck. It's odd..

and thanks falkTX.

EDIT: I decided to skip the first two screens in laguna dream without using the opengl driver. When I started to use opengl again everything went flawlessly until the dream ended and I was back at train.
When I had to leave the cabin same error occured. Heres the new APP.LOG no idea if it makes any sense but I'll post it anyways. Also menu button worked after skipping the first two screens, its really odd...

If it really was a missing file it would make much sense, but why does it work without the driver then? That part doesn't make sense..
And as you can see from this APP.LOG there is no "Can't open file" near the crash event. Would have to know what happens exactly when the crash occurs.
All I can say is its being caused by ntdll.dll

EDIT2: I Fixed it, I'm sorry for troubling you guys. It seems like it might be my Windows XP ntdll.dll file, maybe corrupted..?
I ran it in Windows 7 and it works flawlessly, no crashes.. APP.LOG says same as before though, with those "Can't open file" things..

Please post the crash dump from the second crash.

It may very well be a problem with your system only, but I want to atleast try to find out what happened.

That's not very likely to be the right crash.dmp

That one indicates a problem with the original eax.dll not being installed on your system, something that will crash FF8 more or less instantly.
